If there's one annual event that fans of The Grateful Dead miss most since the demise of the band, it's the New Years Eve celebrations the group would hold every year at the Oakland Coliseum. The last of these was held in 1991, but generally the finest NYE gig is considered to be their splendid 1987 show, one that was also networked on Television and Radio for the entire country to enjoy.
This 2 CD Set contains this full Radio Broadcast from 1987, and features a set that includes such Dead classics as Sugar Magnolia, Uncle John's Band and Terrapin Station, alongside tracks from the band's then just released 'In The Dark' album, like Hell In A Bucket and When Push Comes To Shove.
The 14 track NYE set is complimented by no fewer than 8 bonus cuts from TV appearances on shows broadcast in the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s.
All captured in perfect stereo sound and featuring deluxe packaging, this CD collection will prove a real delight for the Deadhead in all of us.

I know this has been about before but I dont think the quality has been up to this standard before. This is the whole 1987 NYE broadcast, although not the whole show (only part of it was broadcast). But even if you have heard this before, the extra tracks from Letterman [all 4 seperate appearances by Jerry and Bob in '82, '87, '89 and '91 ] plus all tracks from the 2 Saturday Night Live Appearances [1978 & 1980]
Really great stuff and remarkable how fresh the guys sound so late in thier career - this must be one of the best live recordings from the last chapter.

The AOR of the "In the Dark" period has never been my favourite Dead era, so I approached this Xmas gift of the famed 1987 NYE gig with some trepidation (I'd not heard the show before). Fortunately, I was won over by the energetic "Bertha" which opens the set. The band operate at a high level of energy throughout, the choice of songs is interesting, and Jerry is sounding mighty fine. Sound quality is excellent.
However, I have to dock a star for the really shoddy packaging (who is Bill "Freutzmann"? - Shame on you, Left Field Media!) and the pretty dreadful sound quality of the bonus cuts (recorded on various TV shows from 1978 to 1991). The bonus tracks are nice to have, but I'm at a loss to understand why they're here, as only one is actually from this period.
These minor criticism aside, a recommended addition to all Deadheads' collections.

I'm really pleased with thi purchase. I have only been a 'deadhead' for a couple of years and have about 15 albums so far, all studio recordings. I thought I would check out a few live CDs. I'm very keen on this period and love 'In THe Dark' so it's fascinating to hear how the guys were sounding live around that time (which isn't illustrated well on the Dylan / Dead album at all). The recording here is tip top quality and the bonus tracks from various Letterman TV appearances makes this a first class release. The packaging too has been producsed with much attention to detail and includes a decent booklet and cardboard slipcase. Very much recommeneded to other fans of the Dead.
