Here is a lively and lighthearted survey that looks at the role that old and classic fonts - from letterpress to slab serifs and beyond - play in contemporary graphic design. Varied good examples of retro posters etc are shown and have a short commentary followed by the design firm, artists, designers, photographers, publishers and most importantly the primary fonts used.

For myself the quality of the retro designs and the ability to identify most of the fonts used makes this book a must buy. Some of the fonts are difficult to track down, but if they were easy to find then the book would not be so valuable.

Many thanks to the authors for an excellent book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wealth of examples 7 Jan 2008
By Terry Sanders - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
As all of Heller's books, a beautiful presentation. My own preference for historical referencing of type especially endears this book to me. It will be a valuable library addition for whoever appreciates historical type, & post modern typography.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for designers 27 Jan 2013
By Becky - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
It's too easy to rely on design blogs for inspiration, but you can't get this from a blog. Any designer or artist who digs beautiful type and lettering (which is everyone, I'm guessing?) will find heaps of value in this book.
