Book Description

10 Mar 2008 1846032512 978-1846032516
In this book, maritime expert Angus Konstam explores the fledging Tudor Navy, tracing its history from its origins as a merchant fleet under Henry VII through to its emergence as a powerful force under Henry VIII. Examining the operational use of Henry VIII's warships the author analyses the battle of the Solent in 1545, in which Henry's fleet took on a French fleet of 200 ships - much larger than the Spanish Armada decades later. Despite the well-documented loss of his flagship, the Mary Rose, Henry's smaller force succeeded in preventing a French victory. Although many people will have heard of the mighty Mary Rose, this book will tell the story of more than just the tragic sinking of Henry's flagship, describing how one of history's most dynamic kings grew the navy from the five warships that were his father's legacy to 53 deadly gunships at the forefront of his empire-building strategy. Through contemporary illustrations and intricate artwork, the author traces the changing face of warship design during the Renaissance as Henry paved the way for English dominance of the sea.

Review

"Konstam has produced an excellent example of the genre and it serves as a quick introduction to early Tudor warship design, ordinance, and the engagements fought in the first half of the sixteenth century... can be recommended without reservation on that basis." -Ian Yeates, "The Northern Mariner / Le Marin Du Nord "

"The author is a specialist in this period and successfully brings to life the Tudor warship's developmental history and its use on the high seas. [The book] examines in detail the Mary Rose-the only 16th century warship on display anywhere in the world-and her tragic sinking. Meticulously researched archive photographs and detailed full-color artwork, including cutaways and contemporary illustrations." -Capt. Edward Lundquist, "Sea Classics"

"While this particular book is not actually geared toward modelers it is a very good reference to have at hand. Historical reference material is just as important to a modeler as is detailed information on your subject. So adding this book to your reference library would be a wise choice. It is written on a level that allows the reader to take in the information." -Jim Adams, "Model Shipwrights "(April 2008)

."..backed by superb images of period illustrations and the artwork of Tony Bryan, providing one with an outstanding book on a truly unique subject. Get this one, you'll be pleased you did." -Scott Van Aken, "modelingmadness.com "(April 2008)

4.0 out of 5 stars Good research 12 April 2010
Format:Paperback
A well written book, with good research above an overall above average structured book.

There is, though, a minor flaw (besides some typos): the main drawing, depicting the Mary Rose, is not possible to observe in detail. The composition did not take in consideration the fact that pages' border overlap, which prevents the picture to display in full (unless one "destroys" the book by opening beyond physical resistance).

In general terms, a typical work with Mr. Konstam quality and depth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tudor Warships (2) Review 16 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
A Splendid Illustrated Volume explaining the inception of England's Royal Navy providing the Reader with a wealth of Material on a Rich Maritime History and Heritage..Not only a Highly Useful Sourcebook, it also explains how up until recent history, one of the most powerful Navy's in the world really started out quite small. It's sole aim: to protect the shores of a small group of islands jutting out into the Atlantic just off the NW coast of Continental Europe.

Konstam's guide to the warships of Henry VIII's navy displays many of the Osprey guide's virtues - clarity and concision. It is well illustrated with original pictures, diagrams and copies of contemporary pictures, there are helpful boxed off sections to allow you to easily see the different ships that Henry had and the text draws together many of the strands that defined how ship designs changed as a result of changing tactics and tactics were changed by new ships.

So why only three stars? It's problem is that it just seems too short. This is the story of Henry VIII's navy reduced to its very barest of bones. It's brevity forces it to skate over the developments it covers. Although many will like this for its easy accessibility in seeing the change in ship designs, I'd tend to recommend Moorhouse's very readable 'Great Harry's Navy' as well for a broader view of the same topic.
