Product Description

Despite this CD's title, the Bonzo Dog Band did not learn any new tricks. This is a compilation album -- another compilation, one might add. Repackagings of the Bonzos' songs surfaced regularly throughout the 1990s, the best remaining on the Rhino CD The Best of the Bonzo Dog Band. New Tricks has to its advantage the particularity of having been put together by original member Neil Innes. But in his desire to balance the track list to represent equally each album of the group, Innes left out important classics to include much weaker material. It is no secret that the best moments of the Bonzo Dog Band are found in their three first LPs (Gorilla, The Doughnut in Granny's Greenhouse, and Tadpoles). Later efforts were halfhearted at best, and putting in four tracks from the group's last album, Let's Make up and Be Friendly, is simply impossible to defend. As a result, the CD begins very strongly with titles like "I'm the Urban Spaceman," "Canyons of Your Mind," "Hunting Tigers," and the proto-Monty Python-esque "Shirt," only to lose momentum with the much more superficial "We Were Wrong" and "Rusty (Champion Thrust)." Closing against the logic of chronology with "Rhinocratic Oaths" from The Doughnut in Granny's Greenhouse could almost be interpreted as a gesture of abdication to the early material's superiority. These 21 tracks leave behind such classics as "Ali Baba's Camel," "Kama Sutra" (and there was room for one more minute), and "Trouser Press." New Tricks was released in 2001 on both Castle/Windsong and Right Recordings with different artwork.--François Couture, All Music Guide

Bought this 'cos the price was right and for one particular track. But the whole thing is great fun.
