2.0 out of 5 stars This book is VERY mediocre, 26 Jun 1999
By A Customer
I bought it because it was noted that people that bought a book that I REALLY got alot out of (The Mental Edge) also bought this one.

After reading the other book, this was a let-down. It was not as concise as the others.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor, 27 Nov 2000
By A Customer
To agree with the previous reviewer - this is a very poor book.

Full of platitudes and statements of the obvious, very little actual substance as to practical steps for psychological improvement.

The psychological matter largely revolves around a list of sentences to say to yourself in certain situations (it should also be remarked that the kind of sports this is built around appear to be those in which there are periods of inactivity such as golf and tennis, both of which get regular mentions throughout the book). The psychological "case histories" involve people who had a close family member die, not a circumstance which applies to most people.

The material on physical improvement is sketchy and not very detailed (you should read dedicated books on nutrition, stretching, periodisation etc.) and pointless in a book which should really be about psychologcial training. I suspect this material is there to pad out the sparse psychological content.

5.0 out of 5 stars A step-by-step guide to competitive toughness training., 8 Oct 1996
By A Customer
I loaned my "Mental Toughness" book (his first) to a friend who has yet to return it so I ordered this book written 12 years later. I devoured it in a 6 hour plane trip, loaned it to my coach for whom I had to buy another copy to get it back. And now my friend who still has my copy of his first book wants to borrow this one. I'll buy her one instead! Loehr discusses developing Mental, Physical, and Psychological toughness through evaluationg your wekanesses, developing strategies for turning them into strengths, and through a series of introspective exercises aimed at finding out why you are't as tough as you want to be. He teaches how to keep a training log and has a variety of ideas for developing yourself into an athlete who can play at the top of her game when it counts, during major competitions.
