This 1980 anthology is a follow-up to August Derleth's original 'Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos' from 1969, with editor Ramsey Campbell's stated aim being the presentation of new modern day Cthulhu tales that don't rely on pastiching Lovecraft's style or settings. It's an admirable aim, but sadly this collection is rather variable in quality.

Stephen King's 'Crouch End' is somewhat rambling but achieves a Lovecraftian sense of dislocation from reality. 'The Star Pools' by A.A. Attanasio has some excellent desciptive horror but is hamstrung by some gangster antics that read like a 70's blaxploitation movie and ironically make this seem more dated than Lovecraft's own work. Brian Lumley's 'The Second Wish' has a scenario as old as the hills (man seduced by beautiful woman who turns out to be from beyond the grave) but is effectively done, while Frank Belknap Long's 'Dark Awakening' is sadly lacking in either originality or style.

Basil Cooper has a fantastic setting with his tale being set in an underground shelter for surviving humans after the Great Old Ones have retaken the Earth, but ultimately 'Shaft Number 247' turns out to be a curiously mundane and predictable horror story. T.E.D. Klein's 'Black Man with a Horn' is an overlong and generic Cthulhu-genre story, with only some nice character work of the hero being a bitter writer forced to live in Lovecraft's shadow being of interest, while 'The Black Tome of Alsophocus' is a successful expansion by Martin Warnes of Lovecraft's own unfinished tale. David Drake's 'Than Curse the Darkness' is a brave attempt to contrast mundane human evil with Lovecraftian terror, but the characters are so unremittingly vile that it's impossible to care what happens to them, while Ramsey Campbell himself rounds out the collection with the typically atmospheric 'The Faces at Pine Dunes'.

A fairly equal mix of effective updates and complete misfires, 'New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos' is an interesting but very uneven collection for HP Lovecraft fans.
