Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Heavily influenced by the UK acid-jazz scene, Los Amigos Invisibles appropriated the wah-wah heavy jazz-funk, disco and fusion of the 1970s in a far more convincing way than British equivalents like JTQ and Corduroy. Much of this is down to their integration of salsa, cha cha and bossa nova. This lends it just the right flavour of tropicalismo to secure the authentic stamp. It is also their willingness to experiment (successfully) with house and drum & bass rather than just retro sounds that make this album so good. The New Sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera is a non-stop party album par excellence--tunes like "Sexy", "La Groupie" and the scandalous "Disco Anal" groove on a Brand New Heavies/Dmitri From Paris tip, marred only by the occasional OTT mishap. --Derryck Strachan

actually loaned this from a venezeulan friend who thought I might like it...like it - I loved it...what are these boys on down there and can I have some? Some of the most authentic funk grooves I've heard in a while, more organic than the french funky disco boys but in the same party block area...David Byrne is the executive Producer too...which is good or bad? I dunno...anyway this was a surprise to me but a definite recommendation if superfunk rocks your boat man!

... according to the opening announcement.

South America meets Scotland in the opening groove, called unsurprisingly "Ultra-funk", which sounds remarkably like the Average White Band until the lyrics kick in - then there's no mistaking which side of the ocean these boys hail from. The funk is turned up for track 2 "Mi Linda" fusing blindingly with the latin grooves. Then it's into some strident bass slapping before the pace is slowed down into a smoochy bossa nova appropriately called "Sexy". The full-on party spirit is restored with "Las Lycras del Avila". Following on is "Groupie", a surprising change of pace into something you could definitely not salsa to. This is Pink Floyd meets acid-jazz with its fusion of backward loops of haunting organ and driving drum beat. Don't be put off - this is a great track and one of my favourites as it is so unexpected. "Otra Vez" jumps back to latin dance rhythms with a funky twist and a catchy chorus. Then there is the sixties sounding "Cachete a Cachete" opening with muted Hammond organ until the funk kicks in again for the chorus and we're back with seventies grooves. The volume should be turned to maximum for "Ponerte en Cuatro" as we reach the late 1990s with an almost house like mix (maybe Groove Armada would like to re-mix this one?)

A wide ranging collection of funk, latin with some surprises thrown in, it's impossible to keep still to this album and it would give any party a lift even if Los Amigos are still invisible to the UK at present.

4 1/2 STARS: A NEAR PERFECT MASTERPIECE 17 Jun 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

I first heard this cd by Los Amigos Invisibles at work thanksto my boss. It really caught me by surprise. Great dance music fromVenezuela of all places! It is very funky and very beautiful. 1 reviewer called " Mi Linda" a cross between Armand van Helden and Gipsy Kings. How about adding some Daft Punk to it? "Mi Linda" is a classic and I wish the track was longer. "El Disco Anal" is also very danceable. "Cachete a Cachete" echoes Steely Dan. It sounds as if Don Fagen and Walter Becker teamed up with Los Amigos: a gorgeous jazzy tune. Why am I giving this cd 4 1/2 stars? I started to enjoy everything here until "Balada de Chusy" which hits a sour note. Skip the track and enjoy "The New Sound Of The Venezuela Gozadera". I will still place this in my Top 10 best of 2000. This is a great discovery! Great cover photo-oh so '60s! Why can't the variety shows of Univision, Telemundo or Galavision promote a sensational group like this?

pure adrenaline 4 May 2000

This album is a smorgasbord of delight. Starting with the aptly-titled "Ultra-Funk" it grooves from one track to the next, and if you aren't on your feet by the middle of "Mi Linda", check yourself for a pulse. The tracks are funky, sylish, and original. Don't worry if you don't speak Spanish--the cover photo speaks a thousand words. This is the best stuff to come out of Venezuela for ages. Buy it. Your feet will thank you.

Too Funky! 11 July 2000
By Manuel Marcucci - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This band is the Jamiroqui of Latin America. Los Amigos combine a retro seventies funk sound and the diaspora of Latin American sound to create an incredible Latin-seventies funk! The lyrics range from sensual to hilarious! Highly recommended!
