Product Description

Product Description

For many people just the thought of running is enough to make their knees hurt. John Bingham and Jenny Hadfield used to feel that way until they discovered that it is not only possible to become a runner at any age or fitness level – it can also be a fun and life-changing achievement.

This informative and inspiring book is designed to help new and improving runners easily and safely incorporate the sport into their lives. It guides readers all the way through their first year as a runner and beyond, and covers everything from getting ready for your first run (or walk) to preparing for your first race and improving on your own personal best. Twelve different running and walk/run training plans are provided for people with different goals and different levels of fitness. The book also includes advice on nutrition and hydration, and the role the mind can play in successful training and racing. With tips on finding the right shoes and guidance on the stretches and strength exercises that can help, this book is the ideal companion for every new and improving runner. It will inspire you to hit the road, trail or track and achieve more than you ever thought possible.

About the Author

John Bingham writes ‘The Penguin Chronicles’ for Runner’s World magazine and teaches the basics of running to adults who are new to the sport. 5.0 out of 5 stars Much updated from previous books, 10 Oct 2009

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I purchesed The Courage to Start and No Need for Speed, both by John Bingham, when I started jogging many years ago, but in the last few years it has tailed off because I was pushing myself too much and often getting injured.

The New Runner is a very updated version of the previous books designed to get you started in the walk, walk/run, run style and gives examples of ten week plans for beginners just starting out, intermediate runners training for 5k or 10k races and also experienced runners training for half marathons and marathons.

John and his partner Jenny Hadfield started running when there were not many good books on the subject and they often pushed themselves too hard and got injured. They now have the experience to inform the best way to start without injuring yourself and how to continue to longer times and faster speeds gradually without pushing yourself too much. They also explain why rest days are very important and what the best foods to eat when training. There is something in this book that everyone will learn from.

It has also been beneficial in getting me back out there and getting some of the weight back off.
