I bought this alongside
New Museums and had to double check that they are both by the same author. Although Museums would seem like the stronger topic, this book on retail actually makes a far stronger case for why we should care about these premises.
It provides a thoughtful introduction, referencing Apple etc as you might expect. There are detailed accounts and photos for twenty retail premises. The architects include Herzog and de Meuron, Future Systems, Rem Koolhaas, Renzo Piano etc. As ever with Phaidon there is a strong preference for big name architects, rather than lesser known interior designers or inspired do it yourself destinations.
For me the standout design was the Mandarina Duck Embassy by NL Architects / Droog Design which was closed and vanished a mere twenty eight months after opening.
Once again I am not sure that this subject really warrants a book of this size and cost, there are alternative books with more bling and less scholarship. Alternatively the
Contemporary World Interiors (Phaidon) covers all of this and more, albeit in less detail.
