Philanthropy Begins at Heart,
By Venkat Reddy (India) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The New Philanthropists (Hardcover)
I am very lucky to have read a review about this book in one of the magazines and followed by which I bought a copy of the book and just finished reading it. Undoubtedly this is a very fabulous book, inspires you from cover to cover with many enlightening stories of new generation of self-made philanthropists. The illustrious management writer Charles Handy and his wife Elizabeth (pictures), through this book have done an excellent job by portraying a new breed of highly effective, practical and good human beings (men and women) who apart from making their own fortunes have dedicated their life to the wellbeing of others who are in need. Every single profile (about 23 of them) documented in this book are very inspirational and motivational and makes you believe in God. This is a must read book for any one has the wisdom and heart to care for the others. I am sure this book will motivate many such self-made philanthropists to emerge. A great book in total.

Most inspiring book I read this year,
By
This review is from: The New Philanthropists (Hardcover)
If you only had to read one book this year, I would highly recommend you'd choose Charles Handy "The New Philanthropists" . Not only because the compilation of portraits chosen amongst today's most generous philanthropists makes most inspiring and uplifting reading, but in addition I certainly learned a thing or two about why these entrepreneurs became so successful that they can now afford to devote part (or in some cases, the bulk) of their fortune to philanthropical activities.
Written in an entertaining manner, each of the philanthropists' portrayal by Handy is accompanied by a most artistic portrait of each subject shot by Handy's wife, talented photographer Elizabeth Handy. I would suggest that if you're at a loss to choose a birthday present for anyone you know, this book will prove a most welcome gift. Indeed, The New Philanthropists is bound to leave anyone who reads it with a feeling of optimism about our collective future. This book needed to be written, if only to counteract the dire picture the majority of media paint of the world. I am extremely grateful to Charles Handy for this most enlightening work. I think you will be too if you decide to buy this most excellent book.

Too Uncritical,
By
This review is from: The New Philanthropists (Paperback)
Handy is an outstanding writer who has made major contributions to management literature. Unfortunately 'The New Philanthropists' is not a good place to start if you want to find out more about the latest wave of philanthropic giving. Too much of the book reads like an uncritical publicity release from the philanthropists' own press offices. I was struck by its similarity to articles from newspaper colour supplements. Far better to read Bishop and Green's 'Philanthrocapitalism' which places these figures within their social and political context or Brest and Harvey's 'Money Well Spent' if you want to know more about the different strategic choices facing philanthropy today.
