This dictionary lacks a brief explanation of the words listed. It is only a long list of words with marks where to divide the words if they are the last words on a line. This could have been of limited help some years ago. Today, with electronic typesetting, where this information is included in the word processing program, it is only historic. I have a 1979 edition of The Pan Spelling Dictionary with explanations. It is so well thumbed that it is falling apart: that is why I was looking for something newer. I wrongly believed that Oxford Press would be a guarantee of quality. If in doubt about a word it has to be looked up up in a traditional dictionary, which makes this spelling guide completely superfluous. Unfortunately, Amazon does not let us look inside this book otherwise, I probably would not have bought it. If the words were defined; it would have been a very useful book indeed.
