Hi FOlks!

This is a Very cool Orleans collection of 40 trks on 2 CD's for less than fiver ... released by Metro select.

I have several Orleans budget comps, so there are a good few tracks I've heard before ...

However thats fine with me ...

Lots of dapper toons & artists.

The sound is excellent.

Packaging is really really nice - Digi pack, fold out poster with notes on the Artists on the reverse.

Just look at that cover - It's beautiful!!

Whether a new comer or a long time lover of all things New Orleans this is release is worth the pick up.

10/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Not definitive but always New Orleans 16 July 2013
By rp
This is a beautifully put together CD pack. The front cover caught my eye and I had to buy it. Great photos, handsome design and a truly brilliant free poster featuring a photo of the famous "2nd Line" parade. But on first listen this is a slightly surprising collection and I was initially disappointed.

One thing it lacks is Mardi Gras brass music (which the cover photo implies is gonna be on here) and a few legends that belong on any New Orleans compilation. No Professor Longhair for example. Also you can kind of tell that the compilers probably had pretty limited rights to certain artists. Fats Domino is represented by 'Bad Luck and Trouble'. Pretty obscure. Allen Toussaint also gets a single track on there (though he wrote/produced a number of the other artist's tracks). And the two Dr. John tracks are taken from the outtakes compilation ZuZu Man. But the thing is, it's still absolutely brilliant.

There's some real revelations on here for me. The New Orleans soul music of Tami Lynn. Johnny Adams 'A Losing Battle'. Some great funk from the likes of Lee Dorsey and The Meters. For me, the best stuff comes from Huey 'Piano' Smith and Dr. John. And maybe I was hoping for a bit more of the likes of them. But that's probably a different compilation. This one was an unexpected eye-opener and completely indicative of the depth of New Orleans' musical culture.
