A Wonderful Addition to my Collection!

This volume focuses on the military aspects of the English 'New Model Army from 1645 - 1660. It provides full details of the military operations, a full chronological account of the campaigns and studies of the military leaders, as well as looking at the influence of political and religious factors - all in an easy to follow style that keeps the reader both engaged and educated in equal portions.
It includes such interesting features as: how the regiments were raised, armed, fed and controlled on the battlefield, and contains descriptions of how the cavalry, infantry and artillery were deployed as well as the diverse strategies and tactics that were employed at the times and for different grounds. There is even room made for marriage, religion (of course), and even the medals and discipline of the day.
The author has furnished his readers with a wealth of information on this topic that applies to all manner of people with an interest, be they: historians, modelers, war-gamers or someone just looking to learn more on the subject matter.
This 40 page volume book contains eight color plates displaying twenty one uniforms and seven standards in beautiful illustrations with rich, robust colour. Added to this are about a dozen black and white illustrations from the time, and black and white photographs of the weapons and armour of the day.
The material is well researched, and well written, making it easy to follow so much information easily and enjoyably. Whether you are looking for information to aide you in painting your miniature models, assist you in assembling your recreation uniform, or just reading it for the enjoyment, this book can and will satisfy all areas of interest.
I wanted to rate it Four Stars instead of Five solely on the quality of Chris Warner's artwork - which, while fair, pales in comparison to Angus McBride and others who have worked on the series. Still in all - a good book, and a fine addition to the collection, as well as an invaluable aide in my war game painting.

Excellent Basic Reference.

Good, general overview of the founding of England's modern army out of the ashes of the English Civil War. Uniform plates and explanations allow readers to visualize the changes incorporated in the New Model Army.
