From Beginner to a little more experienced, 9 Jan 2004
I bought this book as a beginner (just finished a 10 week course in black and white) to the world of photography. I've found it very useful at explaining the basics of the camera along with the basics of taking a good shot. The chapters of the book work in a succession taking you through the camera, elements of photography (such as lenses, focusing, exposure, depth of field, shutter speeds, film and lighting). It goes on to look at the art of good photography, composition and colour. This is followed by some special projects to have a go at yourselves. It also contains an advanced photography section, which covers the studio and specialist techniques. Finally the section on Post production takes us through the darkroom and Digital imaging. As a beginner I found the colour diagrams throughout easy to understand, and at last it all started to become clear, particularly the differences between lenses, and setting apertures to determine the depth of field. The glossary is also really good, with clear explanations of what expressions and words actually relate to. Also, as it's written and published in 2003, the sections on digital photography are great for an overview also. He even goes as far as to cover in a few pages possible careers! For anyone thinking of getting into photography it's a great starter manual, for more experienced photographers, it may make some elements clearer. One of my best purchases to date.
