Product Description

Product Description

* Kathy McCord's lone 1969 for CTI Records has long been a cult folk-psych classic, rated highly by all those who enjoy artists such as Nick Drake, Vashti Bunyan and their ilk. Its cult status has been boosted by its incredible scarcity - a true holy grail in collector circles, if ever there was one.

* Aside from its original vinyl issue, the only other time it's been available in 40 years was via an almost impossible to find, limited Japanese CD that is, if anything, harder to find than the original album now.

* Ace is delighted, via Big Beat, to reinstate this wonderful music to catalogue and to bring it to what is potentially its biggest-ever audience. The 2CD set also includes both sides of a rare, pre-CTI single and nearly 20 demos that Kathy cut in Woodstock during the 1970s. On these she is backed by luminaries that include the Fabulous Rhinestones, Paul Butterfield and members of the Band. All are from Kathy's own collection, and none has ever been released commercially prior to this CD.

* Assembled with the full co-operation of Kathy and her brother, the equally-celebrated Billy Vera (both of whom contribute sleeve notes), "New Jersey To Woodstock" is a musical journey very much worth taking.

At last! I can now purchase this lost classic on Amazon. As an avid collector of female 70's singer-songwriters this was a must. This CD is infact a combination of Kathy McCord's sole eponymous 1969 offering, an even rarer single plus a whole disc of previously unreleased demos made in the 1970's. The original album is, on the "New Jersey, 60's Recordings" disc, a wonderfully eclectic mix of wistful folk, Beatlesque pop, eastern influenced sounds, psychedelic rock, country, roots rock, Scott Walker style art-lounge and vaudeville. She is an accomplished singer with good use of vibrato. "Rainbow Ride" features an insane psych-rock guitar solo, "Candle Wax" is an atmospheric folk song with raga-like flute and tabla accompaniment. "Velvet Smile" starts off in a kind of cabaret-style and then becomes a powerful gospel-folk-rock finale (to the original album) with big band backing and slide guitar.

I was extremely curious to hear the previously unreleased material on disc 2 - "Woodstock, the 70's recordings", but was infact sadly dissapointed. It is extremely different in style from the first disc, done in a very blue-eyed piano-based soul come 70's singer-songwriter rock style. Being demos the sound also has much background hiss. It is all very mediocre and cliched, nothing really stands out. So a star off for the second disc. Buy this for the superb first disc.

I really liked this, and think it's worth the purchase. I have many CTI Releases, but never found this one in my travels. Kind of unusual being a CTI Release. And being the labels first release. Does not really have the CTI sound. But certainly worth the listen. I liked it's folksy, at times spacey sound. The first Disc sounds very much like a 1970ish sound. While the second disc seems to move through time in the 70's. A time that I first experienced music in and miss. Also listening to the second disc it's hard to believe it's all unreleased material. If you like singer song writer stuff from the early 70's then you will like this. I think if you like Joni, you will like this. As usual some tracks are a pass. If not for a couple missteps I would have easily given this a 5.
