3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the Harmony Guide Books for real beginners., 13 Mar 2002
This review is from: New Ideas for Crochet: Stylish Projects for the Home (Paperback)
Liked the bright colour photos's though. Author does include how to read crochet patterns which use symbols. There is a lot of background reading, which might put people off buying this book, but it does help bring the craft up to the 21st century. Also the patterns may be a bit boring for some. I personally was expecting more smaller projects. Therefore, I would conclude my review with the book not living up to my expectations and certainly not suitable for those who are beginners.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good -- intermediate -- some very nice patterns/projects, 9 Dec 2002

This is a nice, colourful book with a few really nice patterns. But if you are an absolute beginner, even though the photos are very detailed, the instructions are not. I saw the photos and got very excited, as a newbie, but was disappointed to realize that the writer assumed too much knowledge of knitting or other needlework on my part.

I think the patterns are lovely, though, and I am glad to have this book in my library. When I am a better, more intermediate, crochet-er, I will return to it. But for now -- not the best for an absolute beginner.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very basic crochet, 4 Jan 2003

There are a few simple design ideas but nothing above a beginner level. The designs are charted using a rather strange system but really if it is 10 rows of sc in red, and then ten in yellow you don't need a chart. <G> This might be a book you would want to look at in the library but I don't think you need to buy it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good beginner's book., 14 Sep 2006

The only thing New in this book is the photos, which are detailed and excellent for learning the basic major crochet stitches. It's really a learner's book, not an "idea" book. It has basic patterns after the learning section to practice on, and would make a good first crocheter's book because of the photographs. But there's nothing new or interesting otherwise, and it's a total waste of money if you already know how to crochet.

3.0 out of 5 stars NEW ideas??, 28 May 2003
By K. Hansen - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: New Ideas for Crochet: Stylish Projects for the Home (Paperback)
Is a solid-color placemat done all in single crochet really a new idea? How about striped cushion covers done all in the same stitch, or bedspreads made with traditional squares? There are a few creative ideas in this book (such as the teddy bear rug and the Aztec table runner), but most could easily be dreamed up by a person with a modicum of crochet experience and creativity.

That said, the how-to information in the first half of the book is very good, although all of the instructions and terminology are British. This would be a good book for a beginner if it had an explanation of the differences in American and British terminology and techniques.
