Review

A first-rate contribution to the field of film studies. -- Chris Wyatt Cinescape Whatever your opinion of developments in American cinema over the last 30 years, you will be confirmed and challenged by King's aim of showing how these films can be approached and discussed in more than one way... this is going to be a useful resource for student, tutor, aficionado and historian alike. Film Quarterly King has a good handle on both the commercial and the artistic aspects of cinema, which is necessary for comprehending the topic, and he states his case in an academic yet generally accessible manner. Booklist [King's] discussion of the genre is one of the most reasonable to be found anywhere... recommended. Publishers Weekly Film professor King explores how popular films of the 60's through the 90's have been affected by Hollywood's primary function as a multibillion-dollar international business. Variety --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

New Hollywood extends from the radical gestures of the 'Hollywood Renaissance' of the late 1960s and early 1970s to the current dominance of the corporate blockbuster. Geoff King covers new Hollywood dynamically and accessibly in this thoroughly modern introductory text. He discusses diverse films as well as the film-makers and film companies, focusing on the interactions between the film texts, their social contexts and the industry producing them. Using examples across Hollywood and its genres, King reveals how the positions of studios within media conglomerates, together with the impact of television, advertising and franchising on the New Hollywood, shape the form and content of the films.

First Sentence
The thirteen years between Bonnie and Clyde in 1967 and Heaven's Gate in 1980 marked the last time it was really exciting to make movies in Hollywood, the last time people could be consistently proud of the pictures they made, the last time the community as a whole encouraged good work, the last time there was an audience that could sustain it. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential film studies reading, 27 April 2003
This review is from: New Hollywood Cinema: An Introduction (Paperback)
The only course book I have read cover to cover. Quite simply it covers every important issue related to the move from classical to contemporary hollywood (including genre, star power, narrative etc) in a concise and clear writing style that everyone can understand. When writing essays on the subject this is always my first point of reference.

4.0 out of 5 stars An introduction, but not much more, 5 May 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: New Hollywood Cinema: An Introduction (Paperback)
Geoff King's book does exactly what it says on the cover. It is a well written and comprehensive introduction to Hollywood cinema but, it has to be said, there are many other better books which go into much more detail. King does get a little bogged down in definitions of "New Hollywood", but otherwise this is a solid introduction to students just beginning to study film seriously.

4.0 out of 5 stars entertaining read on history of holllywood, 25 Sep 2011
By Alice - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: New Hollywood Cinema: An Introduction (Paperback)
required read for film class.
dropped class, but enjoyed the book.
A must read for anyone trying to break into the entertainment business.
However, it is written as an academic text, so the writing gets a little dense at times.
A pretty comprehensive overview of the history and developments in Hollywood
