Product Description

Review
"Grove remains the best single source of musical information in English. Given the degree to which it has branched into world music, pop and contemporary analytical theory, it may now be the most comprehensive musical dictionary in any language."--The New York Times
"The Grove is...a magnificent achievement, and, more than that, it is a work of love....Another remarkable effort....The book is like a corridor with a million doors, each opening onto a separate world."--The New Yorker
.,."mark my words, anyone with a serious interest in music, whether classical, popular, ethnic or jazz, will benefit from this reference work's acquaintance....Nothing remotely as comprehensive or so extensively researched exists to rival it in the English language."--The Toronto Star
.,."this latest Grove, like every one of its predecessors, is...the most prestigious publication in any field of the arts."--L. A. Weekly
"To be sure, New Grove II continues to uphold the tradition associated with the world's leading musical reference source...serving all who have an interest in music--with scholarly accuracy, authority and thoroughness."--Chicago Tribune

Product Description
Since its initial publication in 1980, the Dictionary has been widely acclaimed as an indispensable resource and a classic reference. The word "updated" doesn't begin to describe the thousands of new articles, topics, cross-references, and areas of scholarship incorporated into The New Grove II. Every one of the first edition's 22,500 articles has been reviewed and revised, with thousands of articles expanded. Previously neglected or under-represented areas have been examined, explored, and explained. Movements and topics once deemed too controversial or too far from the mainstream have been added. And throughout, 6,500 new articles cover more than 5,000 years of music history, instruments, composers, institutions, performers, genres, and more. The New Grove II takes you beyond the customary and familiar into new worlds with extensive, authoritative contributions on non-Western music. From major influences, such as Latin American music, to less-examined contributions, such as Asian, sub-Saharan African, and Pacific Islander, The New Grove II presents the music, theory, instruments, and musicians that have helped to define music around the world.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the previous edition, 22 Feb 2001
By A Customer
As a music student, Grove dictionaries are an invaluable source of information, providing biographies of Musicians, information on genre and style, and dealing also with less well-known fields such as ethnomusicology and Jazz. The New Grovehardly competes with the old one. The articles on popular music are fairly worthless, and, particularly annoying if one is going to fork out for such a large volume, half of the works list adjoined to the Stravinsky article, incidentally one of the best written ones, has been omitted. Nevertheless, again as a music student, my faculty has provided the facility online, and this, ( as it is constantly updated and adjusted), unlike the hard copy, does not have the same problems. If you have the inclination and the money, I would highly recommend subscription to the New Grove online, but, unless you have a particularly large amount of money knockng around spare, I would think twice before purchasing the printed version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome collective knowledge of Music & Musicians, 21 April 2008
By A. Kerensky "FRSA" (Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
How many people know for example that the Ukelele comes from the Hawaiian word 'Leaping flea', the Grove is a treasure trove of knowledge relating to all manner of subjects relating to music and musicians. I have the hardback 20 volume 1980 edition which i am very pleased to own, purchased via amazon's market place for £200 which i consider excellant value for money as a new set would cost approx £750. I see that Grove have added 9 further volumes to the new 2004 set and from many accounts the new volumes deal largely with pop music. As many have said previously it would be great to see a Grove CD-Rom version and given that the Grove Online subscription is approx £200 per year i think i'll stick with my trusty 20 volume paper set for now. Who buys/uses the Grove any way? People who have a passion for music, music scholars, music teachers/musicians. As a jazz musician i also highly recommend the Grove Jazz in 3 volumes 2002 2nd edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars The complete reference for music research., 26 April 1998
By A Customer
TNGMM is the complete reference source for music and musicians. No other scholarly collection has assembled so many outstanding reference sources into one collection of clear, concise, complete information. This work should be in every serious music scholars library, as well as any college or high school which has a serious music program.
