Product Description

Klaus Phillips, Hollins University

Destined to become required reading for students and scholars of German cinema.

Book Description

New German Cinema: Images of a Generation explores the context within which films made by Fassbinder, Wenders, Herzog, von Trotta and others emerged during the late 1960s through to the mid-1980s. It examines the American dominance of the German market place, the notion and politics of an Autorenkino, the framework of European art cinema, and distribution and exhibition initiatives that helped facilitate the birth and shape of a new national cinema. The author discusses the way in which the New German Cinema engaged with contemporary West German reality and how the films raised important questions about West Germany’s self-understanding in the postwar era.

Once again, Knight has written an amazing book! It delivers a short but detailed introduction to the New German Cinema:

- The origins: The concept of Autor and the need for change in German cinema

- It's acheivements - focussing on the difficulties directors faced. Knight looks at films such as Alice in the Cities, (Wim Wenders), The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (R.W, Fassbinder), Heimat (Edgar Reitz) and The American Friend (Wenders). It includes photographs of various films.

- The demise of the New German cinema

I would strongly recommend this book to film students and German students, especially those without knowledge of German, as Knight beautifully explains the social-political situation in cinema in Germany during the 1960s-1980s.
