Once again, Knight has written an amazing book! It delivers a short but detailed introduction to the New German Cinema:
- The origins: The concept of Autor and the need for change in German cinema
- It's acheivements - focussing on the difficulties directors faced. Knight looks at films such as Alice in the Cities, (Wim Wenders), The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (R.W, Fassbinder), Heimat (Edgar Reitz) and The American Friend (Wenders). It includes photographs of various films.
- The demise of the New German cinema
I would strongly recommend this book to film students and German students, especially those without knowledge of German, as Knight beautifully explains the social-political situation in cinema in Germany during the 1960s-1980s.
