Product Description

The best-selling (in the UK) 21st century makeover of the classic post-apocalyptic action franchise!

"Any anime that makes you say "Damn!" out loud, more than once, is worth your time. When you can't help but say "Damn!" to the same scenes the second time around, it's a DVD worth buying. Highly recommended" -- DVD Talk

2.0 out of 5 stars A Severe Let-Down 16 Dec 2007
It was almost inevitable that ADV would fall into the same trap as the new 'Dr Who,' 'Stargate Atlantis' and countless other cash-in spin offs:

"The CGI is spectacular...BUT!"

The original plot of FOTNS might have been basic, but at least it was relatively clear; the Master of Hokuto Shin Ken fights to rescue the woman he loves, and in so doing, discovers his destiny as the saviour of the world. However, whilst the first volume of this new series is pretty easy to follow, it becomes completely bizarre and impossible to explain in Vols 2 & 3.

Even leaving aside the completely gratuitous rape scene in Vol 2, the entire script for this new series seems to have been thown together at the last minute by a schizophrenic man with no short-term memory. And by the end of the third volume, my girlfriend and I were both asking 'WHAT!!??'

It would be easy for us to blame this confusion on the fact that the Japanese mindset is different to ours. But having followed all 152 episodes of the original FOTNS with no problems whatsoever, this new series left me feeling confused, disgusted and completely ripped off.

When push comes to shove, this series is just a pathetic shadow of the original. It's a feeble cash-in clone with no creative vision and more holes than swiss cheese. So even if you can only find it in the original Japanese with English subtitles, I would strongly recommend saving your money for the TRUE Fist of the North Star.

4.0 out of 5 stars will leave you wanting more 8 Mar 2008
Before reading my review, I want to warn you that taking this as a literal copy of the original series will severely disappointed you and more to the point defer from the fact that this series was never meant to be a "remastered" Fist of the North Star.

In it's originality, Fist of the North Star was an even paced brutal anime that depicted 1 man as a savior to the new order of life where the strong survive and the weak are left to die. Following the first chapter in the original series you see Kenshiro, the lone successor to the Hokuto Shin Ken, on his path to save his beloved Julia and kill his half brother Shin, Fist of the South Star. Upon his travels he faces brutal gangs and fierce warriors and even entire armies as he battles through the baron wastelands toward his destiny.

In the old series you see depictions of classic hand drawn animation with artistic backgrounds along with interesting but snap and to the point confrontations that are over quickly and efficiently. The variations of characters is minimal which you would not expect more from a title over a 20 years old.

The new series was never meant to be a genetic copy of the older series, so as you can imagine if your a hardcore fan of Fist of the North Star you will be incredibly disappointed. Instead the director has taken the story directly from the 1996 comic/old series and produced it on screen as a fast paced, bone crunching, spectacle with incredible feats of detail and aw-inspiring levels of animation.
