"Electronic music - Repetetive? Boring?" With a clutch of high-flying singles
already under their belts Cambridge collective Clean Bandit throw down the
gauntlet in the opening bars of the first number , 'Mozart's House', of their
stunning debut album 'New Eyes' to demonstrate, unequivocally, that there
will be nothing remotely repetetive or boring going on in this musical journey.

What a fine ensemble they are; mashing up top notch melodies, crisp and highly
addictive dance beats, scintillating string decorations and pristine vocals from a
stable of hugely gifted singers and collaborators. It's a heady and winning mix.

You'll probably already know and have danced your socks off to 'Rather Be' with
its marvellously soulful vocal from Jess Glynne and the exquisite 'Extraordinary'
courtesy of the wonderful Sharna Bass but dig deeper and there are further treats
in store in the shape of the charming robotic duet 'Dust Clears' (featuring Noonie
Bao); the cheeky staccato entanglements of 'Cologne' (with Javeon and Nikki Cislyn)
and (a highlight for me) the sublimely haunting composition 'Birch', which, with its
beautiful vocal turn from Eliza Shaddad brings a deeper, darker set of sonic colours to
the table. All-in-all there is nothing not to love in this supremely confident collection.

It's gone straight onto my Summer playlist. I doubt I will hear many better albums this year.

Highly Recommended.

This is going to be a different sort of review as I am not really going to review the songs on this album. If you are considering buying this album on vinyl, you have probably, like me, already decided you like it.

Instead I am looking at the presentation and contents and sound of the vinyl edition. I'll also mention delivery and packaging.

The first thing you will notice is how heavy the album is! It is supplied on two heavyweight vinyl disks, and in a very heavy and really rather gorgeous double album sleeve.

The printing on the sleeve is top quality and is finished in a high gloss photo paper finish.

Opening the sleeve and you are presented with all the tracks and their lyrics - it just feels so well presented.

Inside each side of the sleeves is a photo-quality print of the band that you could easily frame and hang on your wall.

The inner sleeves are again heavyweight card finished in a plain white semi-gloss.

The actual records are shiny and heavy and so incredibly tactile compared to a CD.

Each side of each record has a different geometric shape in the centre and its side letter, A, B, C or D. The individual tracks are not listed on the label and are only shown on the sleeve.

Along with the records, you are also supplied with a code to download an MP3 version of the album and a few bonus tracks directly from Warner Records. These are 320kbps MP3s with each track being about 10MB.

The sound quality of the record I found is a little variable and I actually returned the first copy I was sent as it had a clear pressing fault on side D that caused a heavy click for the first two minutes of the record and it also had a lot of hisses and pops on side A.

If you are like me and have always liked the sound of classical instruments but have never really been into the music this is the album for you. Add to that the use of electronics, a really good helping of dance rhythms and a dash of rap (which in my view goes a very long way) and you have a real winner. There is not a dud track on the album with the possible exception of Outro Movement lll which did not really do it for me, but in 'Rather be' you have a track which is worth the album price on it's own.

AMAZING, everyone should buy this, you even get all their videos (which are self directed and really good) - yes they are also on youtube but it is nice to have them on DVD? Tiny bit annoyed as like the week after this the new deluxe-deluxe (or something-can't remember what it was called) album version was announced which had all the recordings from when they did a session with Zane Lowe with the BBC philharmonic (which are also really good) so I had to download that as well...

More is Less. My take, just buy the hit as a single MP3.

The track order of this CD is awful. A random number generator could do better! It goes from rap to soft to techno. The first track is a " rant" about the group's style. This should be the last track.

The group produced a couple of popular songs ("Rather Be") and the rest are clearly from the left over bin. The album consists of two CDs that try to stretch this out (painfully). The second has many of the same songs as the first, but was recorded with the BBC. While the band's "gig" is combining classical music with pop/techno, most of the times they fail and the combination with the BBC doesn't work and it really doesn't add much value.

Typically I buy the CD because I want full quality sound, especially for classical music. The audio engineering seems good here, but the group's classical solos don't really add as much as I thought they would.

NOTE: This is a review of the album. It is not a review of Amazon's service, which is stellar (or as some would say "Ab Fab").
