3.0 out of 5 stars Very slow, lots of irrelavent information, 27 Aug 2000
I was quite disappointed with the length of time it took to get into this plot I was halfway through the book before I got gripped. There is alot of information given in list form of who is on which ship, what they are doing, who they are responsible for. Type of ship, no.of people, cargo etc. I did not find any relevance for all of this information. There was enough to follow with all the new characters to get to know. Having read other books in this series I can recommend that you stick with it as these characters are better explained in other books and we lose some of the surplace ones. In general Diane has tried to tell us too much about too many people.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent Star Trek book, 14 Jul 2000
This book is great and really hooks you for the rest of the series. There seemed at first to be an overwhelming number of characters but it is very well written and the fairly fast pace of the story more than makes up for any small confusion.

The main Star Trek characters are also dealt with well.

The one disadvantage is that it is the first book of a six part series. I don't know what the others are like but if they are like this they will be well worth the expense.

4.0 out of 5 stars A promising beginning to the series, 27 Jun 2000
By A Customer
After all the multi-volume series that have made up recent Star Trek releases, it's pleasing to find an idea that actually MERITS being spread over several books. Diane Carey brings her usual nautical slant to the first book of six, but does a fair job of getting the ball rolling.

The "feel" of an old wagon train working its way to new frontiers is well captured. The recurring new characters vary from the interesting to the totally 2-Dimensional, but it all holds together in the end.

If things continue to improve with the next books in the series as this book improved with each chapter, this should be a very enjoyable ride.
