This is a book all about which breed you should choose which all include their personality, stats and colour photographs, how long the dog should live on average, it's origin, whether it is a good puppy, exitable, trainable and loads more. Then male or female etc. Also in this book are steps to train your dog most tricks and commands. Very informative on health problems, FAQs, Travelling, Walkies, Food, Breeds, Separation anxiety and much, much more. This is perfect for first time dog owners and previous alike! Learn how to do basic training and advanced training. Then how to prolong your FEMALE dog's lifespan. It's all here! If you are considering a dog then buy this; if you've got a dog buy this. By the way it's not only for puppies going onwards, so if your dog is grown up abit then it's still great.
Perfect book!

Having had many dogs as a child I decided that now I was a fully fledged grown up and have been for sometime, the time was right to have a dog again. However it was not straight forward as we have a variety of other animals that needed to be taken into consideration, so I decided it was important to do some research first. Having looked through a few books in the local bookshop, this one seemed to be the most informative. It details a large number of pure breeds, discussing their needs, health issues, live span, temperament as well as how easy they are train etc. It also discusses the benefits and problems associated with rescue dogs, the pros and cons of puppies versus adult dogs, items you will need to buy, nutrition, as well as chapters on training etc.

This is a well written, highly informative book which be useful to both those considering a dog for the first time as well as anybody who wants an excellent book for future reference. Bruce Fogle also has a good sense of humour when writing and on occasion I could be heard to chuckle out loud at some of his observations. Definitely money well spent.

I bought this book as it was recommended in the Daily Telegraph! I'm sure the author knows his stuff from a vets perspective, but the training, feeding & health sections are not as helpful as it could be. You have to search around the book for what you need in other sections, and there are obvious ommissions eg info on time a bitch being in heat! For training I found 'The Perfect Puppy' by Gwen Bailey much clearer.
