Review

''This exceptionally well illustrated volume has much to say about contemporary practice.'' --Association for Contemporary Jewellery

Synopsis

"New Directions in Jewellery II" is a sourcebook of the most experimental jewellery design today, focusing on innovations in materials, technique, scale and concept as exemplified by the work of over 40 makers. Following the success of "New Directions in Jewellery", this second volume showcases the latest developments in the field, and includes all new designers and illustrations, with an even greater international scope. Focusing on contemporary jewellery as an experimental practice that engages with fine art, craft, design, fashion and popular culture, this book further challenges our conception of adornment. With profiles and brief interviews with jewellers working in a variety of ways - from those who are manipulating the properties of metal to conceptual works that critique the cultural and social meanings that have built up around the wearing and manufacture of jewellery - this book documents the progress of an ever-broadening discipline. Alongside, this visual survey is a contextualising essay by specialist and maker Lin Cheung and extended profiles of innovative practices and techniques.

The format of the book is designed to appeal to both the general reader and the jewellery specialist, with thematic sections providing a visual introduction to a wide range of jewellery. The extended pieces provide a deeper consideration of the expanding experimental areas in contemporary jewellery, with perspectives from some of the key international figures working in jewellery today. Profiled designers include: Karl Fritsch, Cassandra Clinton, Carla Nuis, Kirsten Bak, Catherine Truman, Noa Nadir, Eija Mustonen, Frederike Schurenkamper, Lindsey Man, Karin Seufert, Lucy Sarneel, Francis Willemstijn, Beate Eismann, Husam El Odeh, An Alleweireldt, Craig Isacs, Melanie Bilenker, Rory Hooper, Tiffany Parbs, Marc Monzo, Julia de Ville, Katja Prins, Sebastian Buescher, Julie Blyfield, Teresa Milheiro, Arthur Hash, Silke Fleischer, Ela Bauer, Felieke Van Der Leest, Rosanne Bartley, Julia Turner, Ted Noten, Anaanmaria Zanella, Constanz Schreiber, Rheana Lingham, Machteld Van Joolinagen, Dongchun Lee, Salima Thaker, Lin Cheung, Shari Pierce, Sigurd Branger, Monika Brugger, and Madeleine Furness.

Another think twice before you buy edition 6 Oct 2007
By R. Eberhard - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
What could have been a very nice book has been let down by the publishers, the quality of this book is not brilliant. It is all "Matte" everything and some of the photos are actually blurred! Maybe this was an attempt to be artsy?

The artists work however is full of adventure, risk taking in design, playful and very rarely functional. As in Volume I of this series, think before buying, it is for the jewellery designer who favours over the top, or true contemporary styles. No Tiffany here. I did like the book but was genuinely disappointed in the quality of the book. If you are in a situation where you can look inside this book before you buy, I recommend you do so. Still pleased I got it though for seeing the works of some very talented contemporary artists. Not always to my taste, but interesting none the less.

Fabulous display of creativity 30 Dec 2007
By T. ONEILL - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Inspiring collection of jewelry by nearly 50 innovative international jewelry artists who produce amazing work with mundane and precious materials. Includes critical discussions of each artist's work. Unlike another reviewer, I didn't find the quality of the publication to be poor, nor is everything matte. Hundreds of glossy photos show the work well. The jewelry is in the experimental rather than conventional vein, so it may not be for everyone.

Again a great journey into the minds of some cutting edge artists. I love this book( series, as there are 2) and when at a loss in my own work will page through to get inspiration.
