Mellow music... 12 July 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Having bought Dominic Miller's first two albums, I was eager to pick this one up. First of all, the quality of the musicianship and recording is excellent as you'd expect, with Miller and Stacey each contributing six tracks. It makes great background music, or chillout atmosphere. Mostly just guitars with keys and drums for colour. The instrumental version of "Shape of my Heart" should please any Sting fans.
My only slight complaint is that 4 of Miller's tracks appeared on First Touch (I think 2 of them may be lifted straight from there, 2 re-recorded). But probably worth getting anyway since Stacey's tracks are all excellent, definitely worth it if you don't own "First Touch".
Cool!

This was one of the most intimate shows I have ever been too, and musically one of the best. I have never before or since been so enchanted by two guitarists doing their thing. Though different styles of muscician the emotional genius of Miller and the technical brilliance of Stacey form a marriage of musical bliss. If you never buy another acoustic album again...make this the one you do buy. It is quite unique. I COULD NEVER TIRE OF THIS ALBUM, ITS A MASTERPIECE!! So order it, open a bottle of really good wine and appreciate the magic that is NEW DAWN.

I have been a fan of Neil Stacey now for some time. I think he is one of the best acoustic guitarists around. His work with Antonio Forcione in Acoustic Mania and his own band, The Kimbara Brothers are among my favourite guitar albums of all time. He is an acoustic guitarist of the highest quality and I think I would buy almost any album he released. However, without wanting to get to personal, Dominic Miller really isn't in the same league. Better known as Sting's guitarist, I think he works best within the confines of vocal accompaniment. Many of the songs on this album are adapted duet's which have been previously released on their respective solo albums. It is my opinion that Dominic Miller really isnt suited to making this kind of music because he hasn't got the ability to carry it off. That said I think some of his work with Sting has been really good.

Like I have already said this is a very average album, it could have been so much more. I didn't really enjoy any of the songs except the duet version of "Another Day" and even then the original on the Kimbara Brother's album of the same name was better. The duo have recently been doing tour dates in London to rave reviews, I would really like to see if the live version provides the edge that this album lacks.

I remain a fan of Neil Stacey and hope that he returns to performing with artists of his calibre.
