Our reluctant protagonist gets off to a rough start in this story. Left to his own devices Sam Carlisle would be more than happy to continue his self imposed exile from life with a bottle of scotch his preferred choice of company, but the money has run out, so when he's suddenly offered a lucrative, though somewhat questionable, job opportunity he feels he has no choice but to accept. Unfortunately, it quickly becomes obvious truth is in short supply, and Sam's life is soon turned upside down. The story has plenty of interesting characters and twists and turns as Sam quickly finds himself in the thick of a mystery that puts his life, and lives of those around him at risk.
This is an impressive debut novel for Michael Joseph and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. I'm looking forward to seeing new works from this author in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good read 30 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a nice, fast moving thriller set in the north of England. The main character Sam, is an ex policeman haunted by the death of his wife and daughter. We don't know exactly how she died until quite a way into the book, but we do know it left him a broken man. When he takes a job with local businessman Carl Renshaw, it looks as if he can finally start to put the past behind him and begin to move on; that is until his new boss is murdered and Sam is Suspect Number 1.

The story twists and turns its way quite dramatically as Sam tries to get to the bottom of what happened and clear his name. We are taken into a world where it seems that everyone is to be suspected and nobody can be trusted; a world where you have to keep looking over your shoulder in case you are being followed. The supporting characters are well drawn and interesting to read about, and Sam himself is excellent and I hope the author has plans for Sam #2.

I have to admit I did suss out the gist of how it was going to end, but not all of the finer points. There were a couple of moments in the book that stretched the imagination a little but nevertheless, it was a very enjoyable read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great debut 9 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found this an excellent debut with a nice storyline that went along at a steady pace, not rushed, time to develop the character and with a constant teasing of what had happened in Sams previous life as a policeman to leave him the wrecked human he had become before all was finally revealed. Enjoyed it and would read a second novel by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting stuff! 4 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having previously read Death in July by this writer I was very pleased to discover this was another novel with Sam Carlisle as the main character. He is a lovable ex-policeman who is realistic and totally engaging.

The plot in this book is constantly developing and keeps the reader as well as Sam on their toes.

Involving kidnap, staged deaths and murder there is never a dull moment and the pace is fast. I had guessed the ending which was very satisfying although it didn't diminish my eagerness to reach the climax of this read.

I enjoy this genre of book and this didn't disappoint. A little predictable in places but we'll written and kept me interested throughout. Would definitely read more of this series to see how the main character develops

3.0 out of 5 stars Engaging if predictable 29 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was the first I read by this author and although at times there was to much content and the plot so thin you could see through it, this was quite a good read. Later in the book Sam got in a Clio, out of a Capri, then back in a Clio. Nothing to bad really but it is the detail that makes a book. As I said I thought it was a little over done sometimes, but I think this is an author I will read more of and if you just want something to pass a few hours then have a read of this.
