5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Journey into a Mysterious African Past, 14 Aug 2010
This review is from: New Dawn (Paperback)
Set in pre-colonial Ghana, New Dawn is a rousing tale of one woman making her appointement with destiny. It is a great read and different to any book I've come across. New Dawn reflects the values and traditions of an African community; it also reflects women's vulnerability and strengths. The book flows very smoothly and is a compulsive page turner. The characters are described beautifully and while there is a fair amount of vividly-evoked violence and sex it is done for a purpose. All in all a very entertaining and interesting book.

4.0 out of 5 stars New Dawn - the beginning of an epic series, 4 Jan 2011
This review is from: New Dawn (Paperback)
New Dawn is a pre-colonial African version of a bodice-ripper!! The main character Ima is suddenly stolen from her family, taken hostage and carried across the country. She is forced to grow up quickly her life resting the hand of the man she slowly begins to care for; her captor Adiago - who despite holding her captive is a man of principal.
This book is a page turner - you want and need to know what is coming next - will the fighting between the tribes overtake them all or will Adiago win against the arrogant Batum.
Exciting and colourful New Dawn is book screaming to be turned into a screenplay - with just enough tension, humour and the odd little bit of gentle frisson it should appeal to a wide audience.
With the next book already in the pipeline Naa Shalman is going to be one to look out for.
