Another fantastic book by Bruce Fogle. This training manual is written clearly and concisely, with step-by-step, illustrated guides to many different exercises. It deals with the basics such as house training, walking on a lead, sit, down, stay etc and with more complex problems such as food guarding, aggression and chasing animals. A fantastic book and a definate must for anyone who is going to get a dog/puppy, has one already or is just interested in dog training. I couldn't live without it!!

Good Starter Book 16 Aug 2003
Format:Hardcover
This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it, but I hesitate to call it complete. I think its better to be viewed as a starter book. It gives you an excellent overview of all the different aspects of training a dog, but it doesn't go into much depth on any one subject. For example he talks about the importance of crate training but doesn't talk about how to deal with separation anxiety. In spite of this, if your looking for dog training book this one is worth buying.

I feel that I must agree with the earlier reviewer. As someone who works closely with the re-homing of rescue dogs with behavioural problems I know that there are ways of establishing leadership without having to resort to threatening, forced submission, gadgets or fear. Furthermore, the use of the above can actually serve to worsen the very behaviour it attempts to correct.

Problem behaviours do indeed arise when a dog believes it is pack leader, or Alpha (to use the technical term). The solution to these problems involves the owner taking on the role of pack leader, thus enabling the dog to relax.

Whilst offering some useful training advice, particularly around the basics of `sit' and `heel', this book is not a guide to becoming pack leader. Dog ownership should be a pleasure for all concerned and I would advise owners to look to those methods which enable them to take on the role of Alpha in a completely gentle manner.
