Biography

On the heels of Small Black's debut full length, New Chain, comes their 7-inch for "Photojournalist", featuring a cover of Best Coast's "Sun Was High (So Was I)."

"Photojournalist" finds the band building on their signature sound of hazy synths, kaleidoscopic melodies, and Josh Kolenik's hushed vocals, by thickly layering hook upon hook over a ... Read more in Amazon's Small Black Store

Product Description

BBC Review

It is not hard to see the appeal of Small Black, especially at such a time as now, when acts who covet the warm, fuzzy and spacey – usually together as equals – have risen to prominence, sparking a lorry-load of superfluous tags and several more convoys’ worth of artists to fill these spaces, ranging from the derivative to the innovative. With the release of their debut EP earlier this year, this New York quartet slotted firmly in the latter of those categories and they continue to do so with their first full-length offering, New Chain.

The album's brevity would appear to be a carefully considered aspect. Not running to much more than the EP's 27 minutes, it doesn't wear you down with endless extended jams and diversions. While many have been tempted to try for expansion on their debuts, Small Black keep on message throughout, landing their wares somewhere between M83 in a summer haze and a less hefty but still beat-inclined Toro y Moi.

Singer Josh Kolenik's woven melodies are unmistakable in their mistakability. Deliberately nondescript, they fuse with the various parts of high and low register accompaniment, using the reverberating drums as their glue. Occasionally they simply fizzle away in the background, but the times they burst out beyond that are the most glorious, the greatest example of this being the woozy fairground ride that is Photojournalist. Dynamics are not key, and nor are they exploited – the band prefers to keep the levels of intensity constantly, but not strenuously, high. Little respite is offered and Search Party acts as one prolonged chorus with passages marginally more dazzling than others but at all times the modest side of garish.

Although there is much which doesn't automatically burn itself to the cerebral cortex, the standout sections are not found rooted in melody but in the less obvious aspects, like the siren-styled synth motifs of Goons. These songs could be the dream sequences to 80s films which were never made. Indeed, album finisher Invisible Grid is New Chain's closing credits, demonstrating the approach of the previous nine chunks in one bite. And they are chunks you will want to sample again and again.

--Luke Slater

4.0 out of 5 stars Warmwave 25 Oct 2010
By Gannon TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Finding a little warmth within the chillwave genre, Brooklyn four-piece Small Black earned themselves an LP out of Jagjaguwar after the label understandably fell in love with "Despicable Dogs" - the catchiest cut from the band's 2008 EP. Now the band draw comparison with the ambient washes of Toro Y Moi and have recently shared stages with Washed Out, fleshing out his live shows with members from within their own ranks. Yet, Small Black are more than just copycats.

With a strong pop heart akin to Passion Pit, New Chain's lazy, warped drift coasts on watery production while Josh Kolenik's downbeat vocal bobs in its haze. However, its reverbed drums and Juan Pieczanski's bass work stand the album outside of the chillwave hub.

Fuzzy synths add a diaphaneity throughout, but no more so than on the warped, horizontal rhythms of the opener "Camouflage". Next, there's a ridiculously jaunty 80s pop jangle to the bobbing, chattering synths of "Search Party", which lands it close to M83's latest incarnation. With a barely-there aesthetic, "Hydra" merely bubbles into the conscious on occasion, despite being rather pleasant when it does.

It's a little disappointing to find no obvious heirs to "Despicable Dogs" with no track on New Chain crystallising quite as well, but "Photojournalist" has a good try. It's the catchiest offering the LP has and lollops blearily on hollow-sounding percussion and seasick synths while Kolenik emotes breathily in disinterest. Later, the fuzzy squelch of "Crisp 100s" is very Gary Numan, though it features Kolenik's most bleached vocal, which takes it into more intangible waters.

New Chain's stars align for "Goons". Pulling some pure shoegaze out of the bag with its ebbing, flowing synths that musically recall The Cocteau Twins until the track cuts to vocal, keyboardist-cum-songwriter Ryan Heyner's plan starts to become clear. His tracks don't have the energy to cut through their own haze, so instead he builds directly with it. Consequently, "Goons" seems to take the shape of a unattainable cloud-city, and from there on in, Small Black let fly quivering, fragrant barbs from their walls - some of which hit the listener square in the heart.

Advised downloads: "Camouflage", "Photojournalist" and "Goons".

4.0 out of 5 stars synth pop you don't stop 24 Nov 2010
By Samuel Gentle - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Unless its raining outside or you're 15, albums that maintain a melancholy tone can sometimes get insufferable. But if XX taught us anything last year, it's that if you drop beats behind it, you can make melancholic music infectious. Synth popsters Small Black's weapon of choice is the reverberating 80s backbeat, a rather natural decision as its edges work rather synergistically within any emotional context. New Chain, their first full length, doesn't have any tracks that quite live up to their first single "Despicable Dogs" off last year's EP, but it is packed with moments that demand head bobbing as much as they do eyes-closed, thought-free body swaying.

There's something really interesting about dance-able music that's also self-reflective. Although a critical or reflective thought might surface within the listener, the moment isn't one that's dwelled upon. The beats lend movement and prevent the thought from getting caught in your throat. It's that combination of the upper and the downer that makes the music enjoyable without ridding it of substance. It also makes it amorphous enough to suit a range of the listener's moods, as this Swiss army knife packs the tweezers along with an assortment of knives. All of these songs could be reworked into folk songs, similar to Iron and Wine's unforgettable cover of Postal Service's "Such Great Heights."

The album opener "Camoflauge" shows just how capable these guys are at infusing 80s charm and pop nostalgia within a contemporary context. Well before the one-minute mark, the song has already introduced four equally addictive synth licks, which are sequentially stacked and then suddenly stripped away with the introduction of the vocals. Synth pop is infrequently this sophisticated or dense. "Hydra," one of the more humble and minimal tracks on the album, starts small with a bass drum and finger snaps but later snowballs and swells into something grandiose enough for an amphitheatre.

Despite the ease with which beats make these songs enjoyable, most of the tracks on New Chain would be left in line at the entrance to any club. "Goons," found midway through the album, is a notable exception. Beginning with sirens firing off over a click track and a chorus that's immediately sing-a-long-able, it's easy to imagine getting doused in champagne before making some regrettable decisions. These are guys who are clearly as influenced by Brian Eno as they are by Wu-Tang. The product is ethereal synth lined with swagger. Although the 80s throwback scene is becoming overcrowded (although with many folks deserving of acclaim), Small Black are yet another Brooklyn band worth a closer look.
