5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely light reading. 29 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A collection of 3 stories about a young man calling himself Anthony Villiers who is accompanied by a Trog (furry alien) on his journeys to different planets. The stories are fairly light-hearted but there are mysteries to be revealed - is he really a Lord? Why does the trog's fur pattern incorporate all the known fur colours of different castes on its planet? Can it influence people's thoughts? Who is trying to kill Mr Villiers? Unfortunately the fourth book, promised at the end of book 3, was never published, so although we learn who hired the assassin we don't find out why, we don't learn any more about the Trog, and we don't get to see Mr Villiers settled. I still enjoyed the books, perhaps you would too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome back, Anthony Villiers! 27 Feb 2009

What a joy to see this back in "print". I read my original Ace paperbacks to tatters, and sealed what was left in plastic bags. I then read a set of (Ballantine?) reprints to tatters, and now they are lost in my mountains of boxes of books. I once offered Alexei Panshin $10,000 (back when $10k would buy a new car or so) just to TRY to write the fourth volume. He declined, so I guess these three (in one volume) will be it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgotten classics now available for Kindle! 4 Dec 2012

New Celebrations is actually the three Anthony Villiers novels under a new e-guise - so you'll get Starwell, The Thurb Revolution and Masque World when you purchase New Celebrations. These three short novels are gems. Written in a sort of Alexander Dumas and Voltaire meet Isaac Asimov voice, Panshin's Anthony Villiers adventures take place in a far distant future wherein the Nashua Empire binds together the galaxy with bureaucracy and manners. What unfolds in these stories is part comedy, part satire, part intrigue and adevnture, and 100% entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightfully Absurd. (with a resounding Thurb!) 16 July 2012

I'm totally with you, "Read to Tatters". I think you either love these books or hate them, and I love them. To tatters. I'm so extremely pleased to find them in one volume on Kindle. I only wish they hadn't used the word "New" in the title. I was overexcited for a minute there.

Villiers is urbane, funny, worldly wise, witty, droll. I've wanted a Universal Pantograph forever. I think the Internet is probably the next best thing. (Remember, these were written 40 years ago, when the electric typewriter was state-of-the-art.) Torve the Trog is the perfect Zen foil for Villier's archness. Not much story or plot, it's true, but the interactions are gold.

If you read a sample, you'll get the feel of this prose. Like I said, love 'em or hate 'em. Big fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars The joy of future years 31 May 2013
By Jeffrey S. Samuels - Published on Amazon.com

These novels just don't get old or dated. The humor is terrific, the sarcasm subtle, and much of the text is quotable. I mourn for the lost and never written 4th installment (The Universal Pantograph). The only question I have is the origin of the small wistful song snippet sung by the serving table in book 3. I notice that Mr. Panshin used part of it as a title to another work but I am not sure if it is original to Masque World or whether it has another source.

"The joys of future years are past, tomorrow's hopes have fled away. Still, let us love, and e'en at last we shall be happy yesterday".

One of the best fiction books ever written. You can read it twice in a row and notice new stuff, it is fun.
