Bought my New Balance MW978GT boots in Amazon's Warehouse deals section. They were marked as "Used" but when I received them they were as good as new. Not a mark on them. Great deal and a saving of about £30!
The boots are very comfortable and ideal for the three warmer seasons. I need a wide fitting shoe/boot so the 2E width fitting is just about right. Not many other walking-shoe manufactures seem to offer this wider-fitting facility, and the only other one I've found is Scarpa. I have a pair of superb Scarpa winter walking boots (Ranger II) and these are more comfortable than the New Balance MW978GT shoes, but cost me three times as much. So I guess you get what you pay for.
One thing to be aware of though - I normally take size 9 shoes. I needed a size 10.5 New Balance shoe before they felt comfortable.

Generally I like New Balance shoes, in my experience they are constructed much better than the average walking shoe manufacturer. I have had these boots for 18 months and generally they are well made and strong. But there is a real problem with them, namely the soles. The soles really do not give any grip when the ground is muddy or wet i.e. in typical UK conditions. There is hardly any differential between the heel and the front sole and if you begin to slide whilst wearing them then they will not grip. These boots are really made as strong fashion shoes for walking around towns or on well made gravel paths. The lack of a heel or heel lugs means they are not suitable for UK hill walking.

I bought this shoe, which is more like a low fitting boot, for its width fitting.
I have used NB before, and there can be a problem with the wider fittings having a looser heel fit.
I therefore settled on the slightly less wide fitting (ie 2E).

The 978s have an advantage in that they have a C-Cap midsole, and therefore seem more comfortable over distance.
That said, I tried them for four miles, and noted that one was more comfortable than the other (I have feet different by half a size).
I proceeded to wear them for increasing distances, culminating in the 2011 Lakes 10 Peak Challenge.

I did not complete this event, mainly due to trying to descend Great Gable on my face.
Nevertheless, I did complete 9 peaks, and well over 30 miles, with no problems for my feet - or perhaps it just felt that they were less painful than my face.
The 978s performed well on Helvellyn, the sucking peat of The Bog, the usual Lakes loose scree, the abrasive slabs on Broad Crag and on to the varying terrain on Pillar. Although it was a dry day. I have worn them through wet weather with good water resistance from the Nubuck leasther, helped by Nikwax after the first few days.
Unlike other Goretex lined boots / shoes, they don't seem to make my feet feel hot.

They have now replaced my third pair of Berghaus Explorers, while I save my Scarpas for more robust trekking.
The soles are not as aggressive as the Explorers, but are almost as grippy in the dry and better in the wet.

At the price, they represent good value for money.

I have the worlds worst feet including fallen arches, hammer toes etc etc and I have never been able to feel comfortable in hiking boots until now - these boots are light, comfortable and waterproof and I am very pleased with my purchase.

Although they are advertised as 2E Wide fit when ordering on the drop down box there is a choice between a D fit and an undescribed width. I selected the undescribed presuming thst this was 2E. The boots arrived and were D fit, no good to me. I suggest that Amazon sort their advert and make sure the supplier is aware of what the customer is ordering. This wasted a lot of my time. Also I am sure that I am not alone in the UK wanting wide fit footwear. There seems to be lack of choice in the UK but if you look on the US sites there are Merrell and other makes in wide fit.

A very comfortable lightweight walking boot. I use it as a working boot in our olive groves which involves a lot of walking over uneven stony terrain and I can wear them all day without getting sore feet or sore arches. It does not provide the support of a heavy duty hiking boot, but I did not want that.

Buy 1-1 1/2 sizes larger than your normal shoe size. Their UK 10 = EUR 44.5. Other shoes I have bought puts UK10 at EUR 45.

For a Goretex walking boot this was excellent value for money and I would happily look to replace them like for like in due course.
