Book Description

5 Dec 2007 Oversized (Book 1)
In the aftermath of Avengers Disassembled come the New Avengers! With the Avengers disbanded following an attack by one of the team's oldest members, a shadowy villain has taken advantage of their absence to initiate his ominous plans. Employing Electro to disrupt the electrical systems of the maximum-security prison known as the Raft, hundreds of super-powered villains are freed to wreak havoc on New York. Without the Avengers to answer the call, a group of heroes must form a makeshift alliance to subdue the rampaging villains and save the city. In the heat of battle, this new team fills the void left by the Avengers' demise - the New Avengers. After shocking the Marvel fans with the series-shattering "Avengers Disassembled" storyline, writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist David Finch begin an all-new chapter in Marvel Comics history with New Avengers. Featuring a cast of fan-favorite characters including Wolverine, Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man and Spider-Woman teamed with the hard-edged heroes Luke Cage and the Sentry, New Avengers presents a 21st-century revitalization of the classic Avengers concept. Plus: The mystery of the Sentry revealed! The Avengers try to help the most powerful super hero in the world figure out who he is and where he came from! But will this knowledge destroy the man they're trying to help? Collects New Avengers #1-10, New Avengers Most Wanted Files, New Avengers: Custom #676: Army & Air Force.

5.0 out of 5 stars So surprised that I enjoyed it so much! 29 April 2010
By Bob Grist VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I'm not going to go on about the plot synopsis here as that's detailed above. I'm more going to stress the flavour of this book:

I'm not your biggest superhero fan, and I generally don't like team ups as it's difficult for a writer to really do justice to so many characters, and often the plots descend into no more than punch fests, which can bore me in the extreme. Also, I'm more into darker, more adult fare when it comes to comics, so I distrust the mainstream books and believe that, as a reader in his mid 40s, I may well find things all a little, well...juvenile.

However, I do know that Mr Bendis has already had one of the most intelligent, mature and imaginative runs in modern day superhero comics with his excellent run on Daredevil, and I read the first issue of this New Avengers run as a freebie on my Marvel Comics application on my iPod. I enjoyed that a fair old deal so I ordered this big ol' hardcover and settled down for a read.

I could barely put it down! I found it an utterly engaging and fairly riveting read and had whizzed through it in two mammoth sessions in only a couple of days. It has to be said that Mr Bendis is a bit of a master at weaving plots strands superbly round each other and heightening tension continuously. In these two stories he allowed the characters to breath and grow and begin to bond, and there was much in the way of his usual very fine and believable dialogue.

And, of course, I can't review the book without mentioning the very fine artwork by both David Finch and Steve McNiven. Finch can be somewhat overly extravagent with his line work, but here his art is clean, crisp and pleasantly restrained.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite Avengers team 15 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am a long time New Avengers fan and wasn't quite sure how the new New Avengers would fare in the post-Siege world. Happily the team retained many of my favourite characters and the dynamic was as great as ever.
I particularly liked the continuity as the story looked back to pre-Siege events with Dr. Strange, but also enjoyed watching the team, and Luke Cage in particular, figure out how to operate in the new regime.
I've also read the first volumes of Avengers and Secret Avengers and, while I enjoyed those too, I can safely say that neither have the balance of action and laugh-out-loud whimsy that characterises the New Avengers and makes them my favourite Avengers team.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 26 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Lovely charactisation, lightness of touch and a well constructed storyline.
Immomen excells here. Deserving of the praise he has more than earned.
This can be read stand alone or as part of the larger ongoing storyline that Marvel seem to have been carving for the Avengers and xmen.
Well worth a look.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic place to start your collection 20 May 2009
Format:Hardcover
When I picked this book up I was still fairly new to the comic world. I knew of the avengers and I love it when you see a character from another series in a book they don't belong. Like seeing Captain America in a Iron Man book. So this for me was the perfect book. All of marvel's best characters in one place.

The first issue has to be one of the best issues I have read in my entire life. The explosion of action is massive and the story line is pushed from the one moment that brings the avengers together. The story is so good and will keep you gripped all the way to the end.

The book itself actually collects volumes 1 AND 2 of the Avengers Trade paper back's, with some added bonuses in the back, including a never before reprinted issue featuring the Fantastic Four.

So if you love your cross-over's and love your action, this is the book for you. As soon as you pick it up you won't be able to put it down.
