This collection of essays by a group of ex-Mormons is an exercise in attempting to sooth their consciences and reduce the dissonance between the life they once led and the life they now lead. The authors and publisher are well-known for the deceptive packaging of their views; they portray themselves as Mormons and academics, but only two of them hold any sort of academic post. The articles portray themselves as new, but most of them were reprints are articles that had been circulating for decades. Most of the points raised in the essays were refuted in the "Review of Books on the Book of Mormon" 6/1 (1994), which can be read along with this volume as a means of obtaining a balanced view of the subject. A more recent assessment of the issues addressed in the volume may be found in Noel B. Reynolds, ed., "Book of Mormon Authorship Revisited" (Provo, Utah: FARMS, 1997).
