Book Description

30 Sep 2011
Ever since the late 1960s when Yves Saint Laurent and Paco Rabanne presented African-inspired collections, the textiles, details, and colours of Africa have moved into the realm of high fashion. In the past few years, young designers from the continent itself have emerged as people to watch in the fashion world. Helen Jennings, editor of award-winning ARISE magazine, offers in this book a brief history of African fashion, beauty and style, follows its influence on modern designers, and spotlights the best designers, photographers, and models from across the continent and the African diaspora. Profiling popular lines such as Duro Olowu, Jewel by Lisa, Black Coffee, and Eric Raisina, Jennings explores the myriad reasons why African fashion is having its moment in the sun. She shows how designers are looking beyond cliches of the African aesthetic by embracing both traditional and contemporary fabrics and garments, and how the passion for ethically and environmentally conscious clothing is fueling this trend. As colourful and exciting as the fashions it features, this volume will appeal to anyone interested in following the world's most exciting new fashion development.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought it for my wife - she loves it 6 April 2012
By Kwame J

Well put together and lovely photographs. Much more than a collection of clips from magazines as these things often are. I hope there will be a series. I am not in the least bit interested in fashion, but I found myself assessing how each designer was making his/her statement.

Guys- if you want to score a couple of credits in the "interested in your interests" box then buy this for her.

5.0 out of 5 stars New African Fashion 22 Mar 2013
By C. E. Mayo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book was very informative and the color photos are of exceptional quality. The book turned out to be more than just a collection of photos of African Fashion as I initially expected: it includes a brief overview of African fashion of the past and now in the 21st century; it chronicles past, current and up-and-coming designers (who knew YSL's name would appear on this list); the book gives insight into the African-French fashion connection; it provides images of models of African decent who have made and are making names for themselves on the catwalks of the world and in print ads and of course the photos provide us a wonderful catalogue of African textiles.
