Review

This is detective fiction in the grand style; the characters and the plot soar upwards and carry us in their wake. Powerscourt's debut in this intoxicating book is the start of a gilded life in the archives of crime. (James Naughtie)

Dickinson textures his canvas with historical detail as thick as the oil paint on one of his favourite paintings by Turner. (Kirkus Reviews)

A cracking yarn, beguilingly real from start to finish... you have to pinch yourself to remind you that it is fiction - or is it? (Peter Snow)

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read, as always 3 July 2009
Format:Paperback
As always, a readable and engaging story about David Dickinson's lovely Lord Francis Powerscourt, this time taking him to St Petersburg where a British diplomat has died in mysterious circumstances. Well researched and entertainingly written.
I do take issue with the problem another reviewer highlights - that of pages missing. That's a production issue that should be taken up with the publisher, who will take steps to address the problem. It is not a factor that should influence a rating of the book's quality or the author's ability.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well done Lord Powerscourt 14 Dec. 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
When many thriller writers give far too many details about the blood and gore of their murders, and their detectives are angst-ridden borderline alcoholic psychopaths, it's quite refreshing to encounter one who's a decent chap (albeit an aristo) and who approaches his cases with a bit of a swagger. The stories don't linger long in the memory, but they're rattling good yarns when you're reading them.

5.0 out of 5 stars loved it 23 Nov. 2012
By Amelrode VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
I just loved reading this book. It was fast, entertaining, great descriptions and is bringing home some truth about the pre-revolutionary, Czarist Russia. It captured within the first pages and this is quite essential. It was not my first book by David Dickenson and it will not remain my last.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gory tale of death and destruction 17 Nov. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is my least favourite of The Lord Powerscourt novels. Too much overly graphic detail of blood thirsty overlords, and too great a proportion of the novel spent dwelling on these gory exploits. Like the Tsarevitch this novel is weak and lacking in challenging story line. If I had read this first I would not have read any more Lord Powerscourt novels. Definitely not a favourite.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too graphic 31 Mar. 2014
By Prof.
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am gradually reading through this series of books and enjoying them a lot. However, this one was far too gory and bloody for my taste. I put up with this in the hope that the story-line would rise above it, but was disappointed with the slow and thin plot.I am hoping that the next one in the series will restore my enjoyment.

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked this book 11 Oct. 2009
Format:Paperback
I have read several books by this author, but I like this one the best. It gives interesting information about the period, the technology, travel etc. without wishing to disclose the plot, I really became involved in the story and enjoyed it very much.

4.0 out of 5 stars Understand Russia 7 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
With an historical past as portrayed here no wonder Russia developed into the Communist model of the Tsarist empire. Hindsight is a marvellous thing. The author always has a wealth of knowledge about the main subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant series 7 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The author very cleverly weaves real people into fictional stories. Well planned plots and nicely written. Recommend highly, though worth reading in order to save getting confused.
