Manufacturer's Description

In Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer, players are transported back to the Forgotten Realms shortly after the events detailed in the original Neverwinter Nights 2. Following the climactic battle against the King of Shadows, the player awakens alone and stranded deep beneath the earth. Surrounded by a horde of evil spirits, the player embarks on an epic adventure that reveals his true destiny.

"With Neverwinter Nights 2, Obsidian delivered a high quality role-playing experience, reinforcing their position amongst the very finest studios working in the field," said Cyril Voiron, Marketing Director, Atari Europe. "With this autumn's expansion pack Obsidian are bringing a wealth of brilliant new content to the fans to make the unique Neverwinter Nights experience even richer."

Set in harsh, spirit-rich Rashemen, near the powerful nation of Thay, Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer will present players with an exciting new campaign; epic levels; dozens of new feats and spells; new races, base classes and prestige classes; new companions; new weapons, armour and crafting options; hordes of new monsters; and enhanced modding tools.

Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer's engrossing campaign will conclude the storyline that began in the original Neverwinter Nights 2 and focus on combat, exploration and classic D&D dungeon-crawling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mask of the Betrayer - WOW!, 7 Oct 2007
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This game plays very well, it's definately very polished barring one or two instances. Story-wise, I don't think I've ever enjoyed a story more since Baldurs Gate II and it's expansion. The setting, the atmosphere, everything pulls you in right from the start and as far as epic level play goes, I still got my a** handed back to me on a bladed platter on more than a number of occassions forcing me to actually THINK about how to approach situations - a rare event in the OC.

The music is definately some of the best that I've ever heard in a game. Speech is also improved, dialogue is a lot more emotive. Dialogue and character development is superb. My only gripe is that I wish Act III was a bit more fleshed out like Act II with a bit more to do rather than get railroaded straight into the ending. the latter part of Act II and Act III is very fast.

The game works well on a number of levels and it would probably appeal more to adult gamers, the story is dark, gritty, personal, nuanced and very subtle and I went away from it thinking about the themes. Five stars! Obsidian Entertainment has definately created a classic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than NWN2, 1 Oct 2007
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Been looking forward to the expansion ever since completing the NWN2 campain. The game looks far better than NWN2 and plays like a dream, character classes are much more varied with new spells, items, feats etc. The game can also be quite challenging in places and Atari's claim of 25 hours isn't far off correct. The developers have to be applauded on it's improvements with gorgeous graphics and smooth challenging gameplay. There is a slight patch issue at the moment as the dialogue isn't all there however this is easily fixed without waiting for the patch. 5 stars on everything.

2.0 out of 5 stars Flawed again!, 29 Dec 2007
Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
Ok, firstly i cleared NWN2 even with all the bugs, characters disappearing, cutscenes messing up, numerous crashes etc only to get a terrible ending with a few pictures and a voiceover lasting around 3minutes. Talk about rushed.

I love these kind of games though, playing BG, NWN1, Torment, ID etc so i thought ok i'll give this a chance.

The start was great , i noticed the loading times were a bit quicker and the camera options were changed, things were looking up. 10 hours of gameplay later i'm just as frustrated as NWN2.

Firstly they have changed the camera, but it's still needlessly complicated and considering more of this game takes part indoors it makes it worse. It's still the worst camera control i've ever used in a game. The method of changing your view is done by ticking tons of boxes and trying to find a combination that works of which none do comfortably. There's still tons of bugs which again i had to fix myself like script missing my entire team turning invisible in some dungeons, the camera getting stuck on rotating, npcs getting stuck in scenary and inevitbale crashes.

Because mages are so overpowered in this game now the fighting is so unpredictable and luck based it's not even funny. There's a fight you have to have at one point early on in the game. I got destroyed the first 3 times. Then the 4th time it was over in 6seconds and the cue scene just triggered without me even really seeing what happened. This happened in most of the large fights with mages just blowing everything up with hollywood style explosions. Not much fun really.

There's a NPC that joins your team early on as well and if you bring them around their body obstructs your view half of the time so annoyingly that even though i wanted them i had to leave them behind all the time.

Now for the worst aspect of the game. The new concept of this spirit meter is an atrocious idea. Rpgs are about taking your time, exploring and fighting with some choice. This game and this meter forces you to rush everything making it more of an arcade blast em up if you're a mage and slash em up if you're melee character (if there's anything alive left for you before the mages kill everything) The linear design, whilst helped a tiny bit with the other world you can go into, only makes the spirit meter worse. Everything feels rushed and the combat has next to no tactics just everything dying in firework displays.

As far as i'm concerned i've given up on NWN2. Some people say in it's defense it's the toolset and the multi-player aspect people buy the game for not the official campaign. Well my advice is if you're looking for a game where the official campaign doesn't matter to you and you love to fix bugs yourself and will only use this for making your own maps then go ahead and get this.
However if you're looking for an RPG to play in the traditional style of Baldur's gate etc or a modern open ended world to explore like Oblivion then avoid this like the plague as it's neither and will just drive you mad.
