Some people were disappointed with the release of NWN2. They said the camera was dodgy, (which in all respects it was) that the plot wasn't original enough, (it wasn't very original, but it was still well written and had some very memorable characters and moments) and that the gameplay seemed to be slow (well, it is a strategic game, it's not going to be Duke Nukem). I loved Neverwinter nights 2 despite the fact it had a couple of flaws, and when Mask of the Betrayer was released, I grabbed it as fast as I could. And who could blame me? Motb is one of the best examples of what an expansion pack should be. The environments are different from the original game ,(so there won't be any problems with being bored from the areas that you're in like in the original game)the plot is very gripping and unique, you start off on a high level, so you'll mostly be controlling new spells and feats right off from the start. It won't change a person's mind about Neverwinter Nights 2 if you didn't like it in the first place, the gameplay is mostly the same, the camera's improved but it's still not perfect and it still feels as if you might need the beefiest pc to run it (although I have no problem with that). Buy this if you loved the original like me, and then buy storm of zehir when it comes out. No doubt it'll be even better than this after what I've seen of it.

I am quite frankly amazed that there are people who don't like this. The story is superb, keeping you hooked throughout. The only story that you could compare it to would be that of the legendary Baldur's Gate 2, and we all know how good that was.

Do not be put off by the occasional person moaning about bugs and the like. I personally have never experienced a major bug with either this or the original game, and any potential bugs have been significantly ironed out with the latest patches.

Finally, I would also recommend you get this simply so you can access even more of the community material. There are some simply fantastic modules out there, and you won't want to miss out on them. My only gripe with this and the original game is that the toolset is still quite complicated to use for the casual mod maker, but I suppose it offers a lot more to someone who knows what they're doing.

Unlike Bioware's somewhat predictable expansion packs to NWN1, Obsidian takes us by surprise in Mask of the Betrayer, reinventing that very commercial genre of RPG add-ons from the ground up, and giving us something that is qualitatively and experientially quite different than 'vanilla' NWN2. They're having so much creative fun with their engine, it's a joy to behold.
We are introduced to the concept of spirit-eating, which ends up to be so much more than a gimmick or a mere plot point: it partially replaces the fundamentals of the NWN2 mechanics, so that the hero's mysterious affliction becomes the driving force around which everything else revolves. They intend to convey that spirit-eating is not just some fancy RPG "augmentation", but a pervasive condition that both governs and threatens much of the character's running emotional and mental life. And they succeed with flying colors. It lends the add-on an "alien" feel when compared to NWN2, and everything feels more urgent than in either of the more conventional expansion packs to NWN1.

I gushed about creativity in an earlier NWN2 review; well, this add-on has a creativity overload. Calling the plot, the loaded dream sequences, and many of the conversations poetic may be too big a word, but it is close.
The Faras-Enzibur sidequest in particular, a very detailed account of a wizard's contract with an insidious devil, is a masterpiece of intricate writing. As a budding writer, I've sure read (and probably wrote) so-called literary short stories that are far less intriguing and worsely written. I've also found the Anya-Gann sidequest memorably endearing despite being very short.

I enjoyed playing the original Neverwinter Nights 2 and was disappointed that Aspyr failed to bring out a Mac version of Mask of the Betrayer. Then I found macnwn2x, a free program that can be used to install the PC version of MotB on the Mac. It works! I have played MoTB almost to the finale, and it's a great sequel and great value for money. I would recommend this to anyone who has NWN2, Mac or PC.

Forgotten realms games are always fantastic. Mask of the Betrayer is a very good expansion: it is a seamless continuation of the original game and yet with complete new allies with wonderful personalities and great game-improvements. If you enjoyed plaing the original game, you'll love playing this expansion!

Easy to pickup when exploring the different realm of Dungeons and Dragons through the solid campaign, with interesting characters. But the game truly shines with its multiplayer capabilities. From action to role play servers there are a multitude of worlds to visit and a stable community to populate them.

This game plays very well, it's definately very polished barring one or two instances. Story-wise, I don't think I've ever enjoyed a story more since Baldurs Gate II and it's expansion. The setting, the atmosphere, everything pulls you in right from the start and as far as epic level play goes, I still got my a** handed back to me on a bladed platter on more than a number of occassions forcing me to actually THINK about how to approach situations - a rare event in the OC.

The music is definately some of the best that I've ever heard in a game. Speech is also improved, dialogue is a lot more emotive. Dialogue and character development is superb. My only gripe is that I wish Act III was a bit more fleshed out like Act II with a bit more to do rather than get railroaded straight into the ending. the latter part of Act II and Act III is very fast.

The game works well on a number of levels and it would probably appeal more to adult gamers, the story is dark, gritty, personal, nuanced and very subtle and I went away from it thinking about the themes. Five stars! Obsidian Entertainment has definately created a classic!
