It can't be easy to be writing the first tie-in novel for a series that has ended up with such... ahem... 'dedicated' fans as Supernatural, but this turned out to be a very readable book. For the casual viewer of Supernatural, the early chapters might come across as a bit continuity heavy as there are several references to events in the series but it does the job of placing the events in the book between the season 2 episodes "Crossroad Blues" and "Croatoan".

The story is set in New York, something far easier to accomplish in a novel that on a film set in Canada, and one of the fun things in the book was to see the roadtripping Winchesters' reaction to the Big Apple. For the most part, DeCandido's characterisation of Sam and Dean is reassuringly close to how they appear in the series, a detail that writers of tie-in novels too often seem to slip up on. The original characters introduced in the book, including some friends of Ash, don't detract from the focus on the Winchesters. The plot, based around the writing of Edgar Allan Poe (hence the title: Nevermore), is suitably macabre.

It's not literature, and there are a few places where it jars, but for the most part the book keeps close enough to the tone and feel of the series to be an enjoyable read.

an original novel based on the tv series supernatural, featuring brothers sam and dean winchester who travel the backroads of america dealing with supernatural creatures.

In this story sam and dean head to new york to hunt a ghost for a friend of a friend. at the same time, murders are taking place that seemed to be inspired by the work of edgar allan poe. What sinister forces are at work?

I'm always a bit wary of tie in books as they can either be very good or quick cash in jobs that don't resemble the shows at all. However this is written by keith ra decandido who has done some very good tie in novels in the past, and that was enough to make me buy it.

He writes a superb introduction that summaries why the show is so great, and a great afterword listing the music that's great to listen to whilst reading and that dean might like.

And the writing gets the characters and feel of the show perfectly, with some typically funny dialogue and interplay between the two brothers.

As a story though, this is slightly lacking. it's great for the first one hundred pages, but gets stretched out in the middle with the ghost plot, and then the main one is wrapped up rather quickly at the end. and you will have no trouble guessing who the villain is.

The other big problem is that neither plot line is very scary.

This is a good supernatural novel. It's just not a great one. But it has moments that fans will enjoy

sadly dissapointing 23 Mar 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
there is no doubt that the author knows how to write and sam and dean live up to the their on screen charecters, but sadly for me the whole book lacked the action and suspence that you would expect from supernatural.each chapter i kept telling myself that something good was bound to happen as i read on but i was dissapointed by the end of the book when nothing like this at all happened. in fact the most action came from one part in a chapter when dean was hit on the head with a saucepan or something from an angry ghost and that wasnt saying much.I did not enjoy the book as personally for me it was too slow with liitle or no action scenes. It would not be a book that i would recommend to buy.
