This refreshing band exude calmness, and their sweet tunes are superbly relaxing and melodic yet still intense. Their distinct original sound could appeal to almost anyone.

I bought Never You Mind simply as a must-have side project from The Get Up Kids, but it's a great album in its own right. The acoustic guitar work is well thought-out and makes for a relaxing listen. Sure, it might not be as post-hardcore as The Get Up Kids, the only truly electric guitar track being the cover of Boilermaker's "Slow Down", but it is just great background listening. I agree it will appeal to fans of Counting Crows, but don't limit it to that. Buy this album!!!

This is a refreshing album that can help you relax or really lifts you up depending on how you feel, an excellent driving album. I strongly recommend it to anyone that is a fan of the recent resurgence in rock music from the likes of third eye blind, stroke 9, vertical horizon, counting crows, dave and matchbox 20.

As a fan of get up kids and after downloading proceed with caution and goodbye from never you mind, i had very high hopes of this album. These hopes however were not fulfilled. The album is littered with filler tracks and the best song (apart from goodbye and proceed with caution) turning out to be a cover. On a whole i was very disappointed and altho never expected the album to be as gd as get up kids i had expected better than this.

doot-doot-pause-doot-doot 27 Jun. 2001
By Nicola Monat-Jacobs - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The Get Up Kids have developed a pretty solid fan base over the years, becoming one of rock's most solid "emo" bands. With two records, and two EPs under their collective belts, the band's sound has become a mainstay of the indie rock world. However, that's not enough to stop the band's front-man, Matt Pryor, from developing side projects with a different sound. Already the sometimes-rock, sometimes-metal, sometimes-who knows? spoof band, Reggie and the Full Effect has proved that, even when joking, Matt and Co. can still rock your socks off. Now, he takes a different approach: his first solo project, the New Amsterdams, is an acoustic, lyric-driven album, but it doesn't skimp on the chords, either. The tracks betray a vulnerability; a result of too many betrayals and broken relationships. The only danger is that the songs may start to blend together, but Matt is able to vary the pace enough to keep a listener attentive enough to hear his beautiful and heartbreaking lyrics. A great album, enough to make one eager for the release of his up-coming split with Dashboard Confessional.

If you like sad songs about girls. . . 18 Oct. 2000
By Jessica Baxter - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The Get Up Kids have progressed beautifully from a catchy emo/punk band to a band with a sound all their own. The New Amsterdams which is Matt Pryor, et al's side project is no exception. This album is a must have for any Get Up Kids fan as well as anyone who likes the more mellow tracks on their other albums. Also, the Get Up Kids do some of the best covers I have ever heard. Their cover of the Afghan Whigs' "When we two parted" is exactly what a cover should be; both an interpretation of the song that makes it their own, and a tribute to the original artist. I could go on and on about Matt Pryor's ability to write poignient lyrics and catchy melodies. But I shant. Just buy the album and you shall see what I mean!
Great Acoustic Album 4 Jan. 2001
By "rpgkobe" - Published on Amazon.com

Matt Pryor's side project from The Get Up Kids couldn't be any better. The New Amsterdams, in their first release, remind me of a sort of acoustic, Pedro The Lion meets The Get Up Kids mix. A mostly mellow cd with very good lyrics, it still manages to be surprisingly upbeat at times. The 5th track McShame is probably the best of all because of its stark contrast to the rest of the album. And you simply can't miss songs like Idaho, Every Double Life, and the especially powerful Slow Down. I would recomend this for anybody to buy. I think that it can be appreciated by most all.
Acoustic side-project of the Get Up Kids 11 Oct. 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is the acoustic side-project of the Get Up Kids lead singer, Matthew Pryor. Falling into a realm of delicately arranged acoustic ramblings backed with incredibly solid indie-pop songwriting. He also does amazing renditions of the Boilermaker's "Slow Down" and the Afghan Whigs "When We Two Parted".
This cd is incredibly emotional. 18 Oct. 2000

So emotional, in fact, that it almost brings me to tears at times. The acoustic guitars are incredible. On top of all this, you get to hear the same wonderful voice from The Get Up Kids.
