Product Description

Product Description

The achievements of the RNLI, often romanticised, depend on ordinary people doing extraordinary things. The aim of this book is to tell the story of the last 50 years of the lifeboat service through the words and actions of the people involved. In the period since the Second World War, particularly from the mid-1960s, the RNLI has experienced the most rapid changes in its long history. The transition from conventional to fast lifeboats, the introduction of inshore boats and the expansion into beach rescue and sea safety have all dramatically changed the lifeboat service. Ray and Susannah's narrative will draw on first hand accounts of the rescues and the decisions that shaped the changing lifeboat service. Whilst the book will draw on the RNLI's 180 year history, unlike other recent lifeboat books it will concentrate on the last 50 years and will be based on personal and extensive inside knowledge of the lifeboat service.

About the Author

RAY KIPLING joined the RNLI as a graduate trainee in 1973, served as its public relations officer and was Deputy Director from 1987 to 2001. He is the author of three books on the RNLI: A Source Book of Lifeboats (Ward Lock, 1982), Rescue By Sail and Oar (Tops'l Books, 1982), Strong to Save (with Susannah Kipling, Patrick Stephens Ltd, 1995). He is probably the only person to have met seven of the eight post-war lifeboat gold medallists (and to know the son of the eighth) and is ideally place to chart the progress of the RNLI in recent years, particularly through his extensive network of lifeboat people.

I received this book as a surprise Christmas present from my daughter. As a lifeboat enthusiast, and a member of The Lifeboats Enthusiast Society, I was thrilled! A fabulously in-depth, provocative and thoroughly enjoyable read! I was hooked from the start and this was a fascinating introduction to the history of the R.N.L.I. and the bravery of its men and women. Bravo! I would recommend it to anyone! Heartfelt congratulations Mr Kipling, a top buy!
