This book is a hoot and I would not be surprised if it became listed as a "must read" for school geography lessons. It gets the message across in a very user friendly way and makes you laugh out loud in the process.
Would recommend it to anyone who sees life outside the confined world of the Sat. Nav., even though they are brilliant little tools.

This book is a joy - light hearted and informative - filled with quickly illustrations and enticing facts. Various main sections cover the key regions of the UK, with follow on sections for 'Coast and Islands', 'Watery Bits' as well as the more mundane 'Cities'. The section on 'Landmarks' lists the main landscape phenomena in each county - as good for inspiring a day out as for showing off your geography: 'Bell Rock', 'Skye Bridge', and 'Ailsa Crag' all sounds rather intriguing. The pub quiz section is very satisfying, especially if you have always preferred the blue pieces in Trivial Pursuit, or just like an excuse to drink beer. Finally there is a lexicon of odd geographer's words, which will help you pass yourself off as a boffin.

The premise of this book is rather misleading. It is much more a miscellany of the British Isles than a book about Geography. It is entertainingly written and I don't want to seem critical, because I love the author's walking books.
However, if you are a geography teacher (as I am) you may be under the impression that this book will give you some new ideas for the classroom. It won't! It is essentially about the regional geography of the UK and does not touch any of the broader themes of the subject which tend to grab pupils' attention. As an interesting compendium of facts about Britain it works pretty well.
Given what he says about his school days, I think Christopher Somerville would be impressed with many of the current geography textbooks and the lively way they present the world to today's youngsters.

NEVER EAT SHREDDED WHEAT
Well worth purchasing this book if only for the memories it stirred-up. It captures the attention because it doesn't go into too much detail on each item. Great little book.
