Book Description

6 April 2006

Sometimes hopes and dreams don't go according to plan - sometimes, real life gets in the way.

On a mild May evening, a group of friends on the verge of graduating speculate on what the future holds. Will Leah be a chef? Robin an accountant? And Olivia the one who holds it all together? The one thing they know is that they'll always be friends - no matter what - but they make a pact to meet up in five years, just in case fate intervenes.

Years later it's clear that life has not gone according to plan. Why is Robin in New York determined never to go back to Dublin? Why is Olivia grieving? And why does Leah feel so left out as she heads towards the big three-o?

When Robin is forced to return, they all find themselves face to face with the past - suddenly nothing can ever be the same again. And they start to realize that sometimes it's best never to say never ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! 2 Nov 2006
I cannot understand the previous one-star review!Did this person read the same book as I did? This was the first ever book of Melissa Hill's I read and I adored it.The characters, storyline, and the excellent twist at the end was just fantastic and as soon as I finished it, I ordered and devoured all of her previous books which is as good a recommendation as any I think. This is a wonderful book by one of my now favourite Irish authors and I would seriously recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars You won't want to miss this! 28 July 2005
This book had me hooked from the start.Fabulous story with a great twist that you don't expect at all. The story is centered around a bunch of college friends who make a pact to meet up years after finishing college. You really feel like you know the gang and you become engrossed in what is happening in all of their lives. The highs and the lows and the emotions that run through this book will take you along with them. Melissa Hill is a great author who just keeps getting better and better. I can't reccommend her books highly enough, so if you havn't read any of her stuff yet, I suggest you go and read one right away!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not The Normal Predictable Stuff 3 Oct 2008
By Jess Hearts Books VINE VOICE
Another brilliant read from Melissa Hill that I couldn't put down. You can always expect a shocking twist in Melissa Hill's books and this one was no exception.Melissa has a talent for tying all the loose ends up at the end of a story brilliantly and in away that has you going back and flicking through the pages and going of course why didn't I see that before!? A great tale of the highs and lows of friendship that reminded me of my own relationships with my old school friends.A must read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just fluff! 23 Jun 2012
I loved this book. This is the first Melissa Hill book that I have read and I hadn't done so previously, as I thought it was bound to be one of many chick lit authors. How wrong was I? There were serious themes in the book too and I found myself having to get rid of my preconceptions. I also thought that any group of student friends could find themselves in a similar position. It's easy enough to say you will do something and remain together in the future, but more difficult to maintain. The main denouement really was kept secret until very near the end and some of it was a real shock. Of course you are led off course several times, but I thought it was inspired and I admired both people involved very much, as well as feeling very sorry for them. It also addressed the issue of the fact that we don't tell our friends everything, sometimes because we are ashamed, or because we want to spare them. I have a couple of other Melissa Hill's I have bought since and I feel sure she will be an author whose entire back catalogue I will want to read.
Not just fluff after all!

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Great 17 April 2007
Wasn't sure what to expect from this book as I'm not a great fan of girlie books with bright, pink covers, but this one surprised me. OK, so it is a girlie book but for once, it didn't deal entirely with losing/landing a man and doing lots of shopping in between.

Instead, it's quite a thought-provoking story about friendship and having gone to university with a similar group of friends I found lots to identify with. Must admit that the twist at the end completely threw me and was very well constructed but even without this flourish, the story stood on its own two legs. I'm now seriously tempted to pick up another one of Melissa Hill's books, even if they do have sickeningly girlie covers!

3.0 out of 5 stars beach read
The writing is average (sometimes the dialogue made me cringe) and the story seems weak at points but it is a perfect non-taxing read, perfect for the beach. Read more
