I was given this book by an Australian family friend over 50 years ago when I was a young teenager. It is a simple but beautifully written true story of life in the Northern Territories - the friendships, hardships and relationships with the Aboriginal people. It was a tough life. I have read Mrs Gunn's story it many times over the years and it still captures my imagination.

From the start it draws you in wanting to know more. The picture it paints of life back in 1900s of life on a cattle station in the Northern Territory. The trials and tribulations that happen to new wife going into to station are heart warming and though terminology completely wrong in today's world it makes the book all the more compulsive to finish. A classic to read again.

Whilst I enjoyed reading the book on kindle I feel that it missed a great deal by not having pictures, even just the one on the front cover. I hope to visit the area soon and feel the book gave me insight to the early days of the 'white' development of the Northern Territory.

This captures such a unique time in Australian history. Based on her own life, this brief period in the NT in the early 20th century, is truly fascinating. Although the writing style isn't particularly great, it's definitely worth a read.
