'Never Let Me Down Again' was a landmark single for Depeche Mode. It didn't do much in the charts- but as part of their concerts for the Masses and resulting '101' live album & film- it became the Mode's theme tune...Of the various mixes here- you only need the single and extended versions (tho' both these are on 'Music for the Masses' and '101'). Versions like the Chris Tsangarides mix are extremely similar...The b-side 'Pleasure Little Treasure' is great- moving towards the Chuck Berry/tuetonic twang of 'Behind the Wheel-Route 66' and 'Personal Jesus'(and it hasn't got Gahan shouting rock cliches all over it-as the live take on '101'). The Mode have attempted to return to the 'Never' sound for 'Barrel of a Gun' & 'Only When I Lose Myself'- but sounded very, very tired...Still the highlight of their concerts- what is it about this song? Drug euphoria or strangelove sex? Why does the lyric "Promise me I'm as safe as houses,as long as I remember whose wearing the trousers" mean so much? And why does EVERYONE wave their hands in the air during the Wagnerian synth solo which climaxes this song? Still, a classic Mode single
