From the Author

What the book is about and why I wrote it.
Hi, I'm Mardy Grothe. Thanks for your interest in my new book, "Never Let a Fool Kiss You or a Kiss Fool You." This is the first popular book ever published on the literary and rhetorical device known as chiasmus (ky-AZ-mus). If you aren't sure what chiasmus means, you have a lot of company. Most people--even the most sophisticated and literate people--don't. Chiasmus occurs when the order of words is reversed in parallel expressions. While you may not be familiar with the word, you're well acquainted with the phenomenon, for it shows up in thousands of famous sayings, like "Failing to plan is planning to fail," "Quitters never win and winners never quit," and "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." Some of the most clever, thought-provoking, and memorable things ever said or written are examples, like JFK's famous "Ask not what your country can do for you" line and these other provocative examples:

"In the Halls of Justice, the only justice is in the halls." -- Lenny Bruce

"Is man one of God's blunders, or God one of man's blunders? -- Nietzsche

"Love makes time pass, time makes love pass." -- Italian Proverb

"The value of marriage is not that adults produce children, but that children produce adults." -- Peter De Vries

My goal is to bring chiasmus out of the closet of obscurity and move it into the world of popular parlance. If there's a precedent for what I'm trying to do, it's the word oxymoron. Fifty years ago, it was a rare word, known by only a small and select group of people. Today virtually all literate people know what it means. I want the same thing to happen with chiasmus.

I accidentally stumbled on the word nearly ten years ago and, ever since, my life has been dominated by chiasmus and the search for chiastic (that's the adjective) quotations. I now have over 10,000 chiastic quotes in my personal collection. I sometimes say, "I didn't just get into chiasmus, chiasmus also got into me."

If you're a word, language, or quotation lover, I think you will love this book. In it, you're going to find some of the most incredible quotes ever assembled--including hundreds I guarantee you've never seen before.

Once you begin using the word chiasmus in everyday discourse, you'll probably impress people with your erudition. And maybe you'll even put a few know-it-alls in their place as you toss out a quote they've never heard before and add innocently, "As you know, that's a particularly fine example of chiasmus."

A working knowledge of chiasmus can also add some special moments to your life, as you share your own chiastic creations--sometimes quite spontaneously--with others. Here are two recent examples from my life. I sent out an e-mail the other day inviting friends to a book publication party. When I had to type something in the subject line, the words came almost effortlessly:

"Celebrating a Book and Booking a Celebration."

And while having dinner with friends recently, someone asked me about my hopes for the book. I said, "Well, I've had a wealth of experience, so I guess I'm hoping this book will provide me with . . . I don't know . . . an experience of wealth." We all laughed heartily, and there were "oohs" and "aahs" from all around as people marveled at my extemporaneous chiastic reply.

Will this book provide me with an experience of wealth? Probably not. But I've had a ball putting the book together, and I think you'll have a ball reading it. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

If only all reference books were this much fun...and useful. I sling words for a living...and this elegant little tome is an easy investment.

It's a particularly tart way to blow through writer's block.

I am a scholar and avid fan of Ernest Hemingway. Only after devouring Dr. Mardy's Grothe groundbreaking collection of literary treasures did I realize that Hemingway too employs the chiastic trick in much of his writing. Dr. Grothe's book inspired me to reread many of the author's literary masterpieces as well as his letters and interviews. Sure enough, I found chiasmus popping up here and there in Hemingway's written and spoken statements. I was truly dumbfounded that the author used the technique so frequently. "Never Let a Fool Kiss You or a Kiss Fool You" is an enlightening, expertly selected goldmine of profound insights and immortal truths that is sure to have a significant impact on the way each of us views and uses language. It even prompted me to pen my own chiastic observation in Hemingway could the century of the writer be more celebrated than the most celebrated writer of this century."

For word lovers everywhere! 14 Jan 2000
By "itbe" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Dr. Mardy Groethe not only introduced me to the literary deviceof chiasmus, but completely engaged and entertained me with his bookon the subject. The book is truly a joy! Dr. Groethe's chiasmi span from old to new, from light to meaningful, from humorous to serious. He shows how chiasmus are used by everyone: from poets to politicians, from writers to actors, from coaches to philosophers. Adding to the book is how Dr. Groethe organizes it, essentially enabling the reader to find a chiasmus for any occasion. It's no surprise to me that "Never Let A Fool Kiss You..." is the 8th best-selling quotation book in amazon.com's history (as of 1/10/00) and going strong!

A new lover of chiasmus, I visited Dr. Groethe's website immediately after reading his book and signed up to receive free daily chiastic quotes directly from him!

NEVER KISS A FOOL OR LET A KISS FOOL YOU 13 May 2000
By Patricia R. Christie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
What a great little book. If you like wordplay, philosphy, history and pop culture, you'll love reading chiamus quotes from then and now. Chiasmus stretchs and delights the mind. I bought the book as a guide to my teenage daughter...you know...for the kissing part, but it has also become a delightful source of information as well as entertainment. We have fun trying to make up our own chiasmus lines. If you subscribe to Grothe's weekly Chiasmic Quotes...you'll discover a new puzzle and antedote. It always gives a moment of thought or mirth; giving new pleasure to the announcement to 'you've got mail'.

An Invitation to a Feast: The World of the Chiasmus 20 Jan 2000
By Dennis R. Ridley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
There are books that you can really get into, and there are books that really get into you. Dr. Mardy Grothe's "Never Let a Fool Kiss You or a Kiss Fool You" is one of the latter. It is a book to be savored like a hearty soup. If you encounter the book or the wonderful web site chiasmus.com as I did, you will come in the door not knowing what a "chiasmus" is, and afterwards you will find examples everywhere. You will even start making them up. There are books one reads for information and others one reads for pleasure. This book is wonderfully informative. As for pleasure, that word is too bland to describe the delights in store for the reader. The knowledge of chiasmus will expand and stretch you, helping you see things you never saw before and challenging you to think in ways you've never thought before. God bless you, Mardy Grothe, for the gift of this book!
