Book Description

A fascinating miscellany of hundreds of facts you never knew about Wales, in bestselling format

Product Description

Take a spellbinding journey around Wales to discover the tales buried deep in the country's history. Packed full of legends, firsts, birthplaces, inventions and adventures, I Never Knew That About Wales visits the thirteen traditional Welsh counties and unearths the hidden gems that they each hold. Discover where history and legends happened; where people, ideas and inventions began; where dreams took flight; where famous figures were born and now rest. A glittering pantheon of writers and artists, thinkers and inventors, heroes and villains have lived and toiled in this small country. Remarkable events, noble (and dastardly) deeds and exciting adventures have all taken place with Wales as their backdrop. This book seeks out their heritage, their monuments, their memories and their secrets.

You'll be able to visit Britain's smallest city, St David's with its glorious 12th-century cathedral slumbering in a sleepy hollow near the sea. Explore Britain's greatest collection of castles from the first stone fortress at Chepstow to Britain's finest concentric castle at Beaumaris and the magnificent Caernarvon, birthplace of the first Prince of Wales. Browse through the second hand book capital of the world, Hay-on-Wye, wander the glorious Gower peninsula, Britain's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Take a trip to Fishguard, where the last invasion of Britain took place in 1797. Marvel at Thomas Telford's Menai Bridge, the world's first iron suspension bridge or Pontcysyllte, the longest bridged aqueduct in Britain.

This irresistible compendium of facts and stories will give you a captivating insight into the people, ideas and events that have shaped the individual identity of every place you visit, and will have you exclaiming again and again: 'Well, I never knew that!'

I regularly set quizzes in my welsh local, and I thought that this book would be a great little source of questions. The trouble is that it has been carelessly put together, and many of the so-called facts are just plain wrong. Case in point. On the Breconshire page it says that the Brecon Beacons became Wales' first National Park in 1957. Then on the Caernarfonshire pages it says that Snowdonia became a National Park in 1951 ! That's just careless and lazy. There are other examples, but I'm sure you get my drift. The great shame of this is that it is a great idea for a book, but if you do something like this you have to really make an effort to get things right. This is just too slipshod. An opportunity wasted.

A great disappointment. Lots the things I didn't know because they are plain wrong. Please get someone who knows Wales to revise it.

Nice bite size bits of information - not all accurate but not as inaccurate as some might like you to believe. If you want a book to keep in the car and read whilst you are waiting for your kids - then this is the book for you. Every item is brief and can be read in less than 10 minutes.

Welsh rarebits
Once again we are entertained by reading a lot of nonsense about a part of the UK. Makes for pleasant/easy reading.

Rubbish
Too many errors to make it past the 1 star I'm afraid. Opinion is fine if it's qualified but this has just plain facts wrong!

Who did the Index?
Like all this series, this is good fun and well produced. But whoever gave Ralph Vaughan Williams a knighthood in the Index had better watch out at the Pearly Gates - the one... Read more

Inaccuracies
This book is riddled with inaccuracies. The author stated that both Gareth Edwards and JPR Williams played for Llanelli, untrue in both cases. There were other untruths too. Read more
