Product Description

CD Description

The legendary Mitch Ryder was in fine vocal form when he unleashed this powerful hound dog of an album way back in 1983. Mitch was already regarded as an R&B legend by the Eighties, but on this collection of well chosen songs, he was keen to re-establish his presence on the ever-changing music scene. Mitch was ably assisted on this venture by artist-turned-producer John Cougar Mellencamp, whose band also provides a contemporary backing. Among the contributors to the success of these tracks is Kenny Aronoff, whose forceful drumming nails down a solid beat. There's also some special guests among the backing vocalists, including a surprise visit from songstress Marianne Faithfull, who duets with Mr. Ryder on A Thrill's A Thrill . Among the other standout performances is a cover of the Prince tune When You Were Mine and the lively opener B.I.G.T.I.M.E. It sure is a big time album that still packs a punch and a kick.

4.0 out of 5 stars unexpectedly good - 1 April 2009
By Robert T. Adams - Published on Amazon.com
I have never been a Mitch Ryder fan - I mean sure who HASN'T heard Devil With a Blue Dress or Good Golly Miss Molly but that was the extent of my Mitch Ryder acumen...I was attracted to this album (yeah I'm old) when I saw the video for Mitch's version of Princes' "When You Were mine" on MTV. There are a few standout cuts with B.I.G.T.I.M.E. opening the record (I'm over 40) and setting a nice rocking nightclubbish pace - The aforementioned Prince cover is excellent - The backing band is John Mellencamps boys - complete with JCM himself adding backing vocals (as well as producing the record) on "a Thrill's a Thrill"..(along with Marianne Faithful) I like "Come Again" a song that allows Mitches trademark gruff voice to shine - as though he is requesting something he knows damn well he ain't gonna get. The whole record is very satisfying - I love Kenny Aronoffs drumming - forceful and to the point-
"Cry to Me" is another great song with "Code Dancing" presenting a Mellencampish beat - fine work gentlemen-I bought it again a few weeks ago because someone never returned the original - it's one of "those" type records (I'm 48)

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally out on CD 22 July 2012

I am a big Mitch Ryder fan and bought this on vinyl. It was John Mellencamp's attempt to help an early influence by getting Ryder out on a major label. (John Mellencamp's career was peaking at about this time.) I thought the record was stunning and after his several great Seeds and Stems recordings (in the late-seventies) I hoped Mitch would finally get the acclaim and recognition that he deserved. This recording should have done it. It is superb all the way through. The band is tight, the song selections are inspired, and while it jangles (ala Mellencamp) more than any other MR recording, it still rocks hard.

It has been unavailable on CD until now. Buy it and enjoy. The sound quality is far better then the needle drop I have been listening to and is comparable to the vinyl copy I still play with some regularity. I do wish they had found some extras, but maybe they are saving something for later. Maybe not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Waited A Long Time For This CD To Come Out -- And It Was Worth The Wait 9 Feb 2013

Finally, one of my favorite albums from the 80s is FINALLY available on CD. The sound quality is outstanding on this release. If your not familiar with the album, check out his cover of When You Were Mine by Prince, Mitch does an awesome version of it here. My favorite track is The Thrill Of It All ,a great rocking song that he performed on American Bandstand. The whole album is a great listen. If you like music from the 80s, I doubt you would be disappointed. The album was produced by John Mellencamp.
