4.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Read 6 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Meet Mirabella Whittingham, currently she is going around kissing loads of men in London. Unknown to her though, her fiance is back in the country, after living for six years in America. Neither of them have ever met before, and when Camden, Viscount Stonehurst meets a young lady he is captivated. However, when he finds this woman again she is in the arms of another man, and kissing; also he finds that she is his betrothed. Both of them being forced into an engagement that they had no say in, things look like they will be called off. With Camden's family in dire straits though, if the engagement is called off the dowry already handed over will have to be returned. Coming to a deal with Mirabella they decide to keep engaged until Camden can raise enough finances to put his family back on a steady footing.

There are definite strong feeling between the couple, but is it love?, or just lust? With Mirabella being caught out in another exploit by Camden, the truth finally comes out. Mirabella's aunt had a ward, Sarah, who was Mirabella's closest friend. Sarah had died the year before in her sleep, but Mirabella has read Sarah's diary, and knows that it was suicide, due to the way she had been treated by a man. Mirabella is determined to avenge her friend, and with the help of Camden they try to do just that.

To be honest, as this was on promo I thought I would download it out of curiosity and I must admit that I was soon into the story, and found it quite enjoyable. The question of who the rake was who made Sarah take her life, and whether Mirabella and Camden will stay together or not are really quite predicatable, but this is well enough written and is a great piece of escapism, so it is easy to overlook its pitfalls. I should warn you that there are a few 'naughty bits' in this, but if you want to read something to daydream over women should find this worth while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Read 19 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
My summary of the book - Mirabella has been waiting years for her fiancé to come back from America and when he finally returns he finds her in a middle of scandal. The only reason she is in a scandal is that she is trying to find the man who made her cousin to commit suicide. Can the pair still be engaged and can Mirabella find the man who took advantage of her cousin.

Thoughts on the characters - Mirabella is quite amusing and lovely at the same time. She only cares about finding the man who hurt her cousin so he can't do it to another woman and she doesn't mind if it ruins her reputation. She cares about her family and tries to protect them all. When she finally meets her fiancé she is shocked by the attraction but when he finds out what she has been up to she doesn't know what to do. Obliviously he is angry but she can't stop her quest.
Camden is very angry when he finds out what Mirabella has been up while he has been in America but he needs to pretend they are the happy couple while he sorts out his family problems. He is determined to help his family even if he has to be Mirabella all the time. He also feels the attraction with Mirabella which confuses him as he is angry with her and knows she is hiding something but he just can't stay away from her.

Overall thoughts - This is a first one of Amelia Grey's books that I have read and loved it. As soon as I started reading I was sucked in and read it in one day. It is very amusing, passionate and brilliant read. There is one bit I love where Mirabella is actually blaming Camden for the reason why she is kissing other gentleman because she is trying to distract him from the real reason. He just can't believe that she is blaming him and it is amusing how they interact over how they view things. This is another author to add to growing pile of authors to definitely read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Let down by terrible lack of research 14 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The story is fine, the characters predictable but not dislikable. This book is an easy read. But any English person - or anyone who knows anything about English history - will cringe at almost every sentence in this book. Although the author has made an effort to think in a slightly different time/place, she is let down by a woeful lack of research. Huge errors jump out of the page; 'Let's make it a fall wedding,' for example, or 'He passed on'. Every word of dialogue is a terrible cliche. The names of all the main characters are so odd, and not at all English. Other than that though, the depiction of Regency society isn't bad and, with some details such as the chaperones, and rides in Hyde Park, quite believable. The sex scenes were just awful, again because of the cheesy and frankly out of place dialogue. The author obviously tried hard, but please - never try to write historical fiction again!

2.0 out of 5 stars Highly predictable 9 Aug 2011

This book is predictable from the start. You know exactly what is going to happen and to be honest I hate to not finish a book and that was the only reason why I kept reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant read 19 Aug 2011

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Whilst not the best example of the genre I've read I enjoyed reading this. The plot, although predictable in places, moved on swiftly enough. The real highlight for me was how well drawn the main characters were, very well rounded and believeable. I did struggle with some of the jarring anachronisms and found that there was a little too much descriptive detail in places, obvious research. I could gloss over that most of the time and am glad I downloaded it.
