With thoughts of the film career and his upcoming Army stint, one could assume that '58 would be a flat year for Elvis musically, but this can be totally disapproved by purchase of this collection (or the superiour and fantistically titled "50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong").
This album takes tracks from the "King Croele" session in january, the "Wear My Ring" sessions in February, and finally the great June stint, recorded on a weekend pass. The latter two sessions sit well together, but the "King Croel" fits less well.
January: King Creole was never a great song, and the altneriatve takes were thankfully set asside for the superiour take eventually used. The sweet piano only version "As Long As I have You" is a really nice song, well sang,. Also hearing Kitty's full intro to the classy "Crawfish" is electrifying, and it's nice to hear "Danny" in its rightful place.
February: The versions of "Doncha' Think Its Time" and "Wear My Ring" are both quite similar to the versions that made his second single of '58. While both are good songs, it's clear Elvis didn't have a lot of fire for these songs.
June: It's Elvis Heracy to say it, but June brought together Elvis' best group. The great Hank Garland was on board on guitar, Floyd Cramer on piano and Bob Moore (not the former England football captain) on base. This was the "Elvis Is Back" band, and it shows. Elvis turned out half a dozen songs, which were as good as anything he ever recorded. It's fun as well hearing his mock army talk, and cock-ups and general good humour, not only did this session produce great music but also seemed real fun.
