Book Description

18 Oct 2012

Fun, quirky and informative, A Neutron Walks Into A Bar... is a collection of facts, definitions, explanations, biographies and jokes guaranteed to quench a thirst for knowledge, discovery and humour that's out of the ordinary.

Did you know that water is the only thing found naturally on earth in each of the 3 states of matter?

This book began its life as Science140, an exciting social media project co-ordinated by four Irish science communicators and enthusiasts including Aoibhinn N? Sh?illeabh?in presenter of RTE's The Science Squad, Maria Delaney, Humphrey Jones and Paul O'Dwyer. Since its launch on Twitter in the spring of 2012, thousands of tweets have been collected, each explaining a scientific principle, fact, joke or biography in 140 characters or less. The tweets collected are on a range of topics from astronomy to zoology, and have been compiled by science enthusiasts, educators, members of the public and celebrities from all over the world.

Did you know that the Mississippi alligator can stay underwater for 6 hours?

Neither a textbook nor a definitive guide to science, A Neutron Walks Into a Bar... is a fun way to learn new, interesting and unusual things about the world we live in!

All royalties in aid of Cystic Fibrosis research.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit of fun 22 Jan 2013
By Fionao4
Format:Hardcover
First up, a disclosure - a few of my own tweets ended up in this book.

In fact, lots of people contributed through the hashtag #Science140 on Twitter.

As the hashtag suggests, those contributions are limited to 140 characters, so the book is full of short and punchy entries sourced from a crowd. The result? This isn't the kind of book you sit and read in one go, it's a 'dipper'.

I think it was an interesting experiment, the authors did well to translate it from the online forum into a book and the results are fun and thought-provoking.

If you are looking for a serious tome on science, keep looking. If you want a bit of fun and to possibly learn something along the way, try this.

Plus it raises money for a great cause, cystic fibrosis research.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy book binding! 9 Jan 2013
Format:Hardcover
As an avid book reader it genuinely saddens me to be critical of any book writing endeavour. So straight away let me commend this group for taking the time to get a book published. However, that said, I would have to say that the quality of the content of this book is poor. Only occasional entries could be described as 'knowledge level' appropriate, so either the level of an article is aimed so low that it's valueless or as with the entry on the Periodic Table, written using terms that require a level of pre-knowledge that make the actual entries useless.
I think that this is an attempt to jump on the New Scientist model of books (Do Penguins feet freeze, Do Elephants get lonely, Will we ever speak Dolphin etcwithout coming even close to their, admittedly, fairly low level. A lot of the time I was left with the impression of pages being filled with writing just for the sake of it. Also the addition of humorous entries is not kept clearly delimited leaving the erroneous impression that perhaps some of the entries that are supposed to be serious may actually be tongue in cheek e.g. .. robins can see magnetic fields ...
This is definitely one of those books that you don't mind picking up in a second hand book shop for a euro but you'd be disappointed thinking that real money may have been spent on the copy you have in your hands.
To end on a positive note, the quality of the actual book i.e. cover, cover art and binding is very good.
